Well our new camper gets delivered tonight or tomorrow morning and it needs to be registered. It weights 850kg as it is fitted with the beds, fridge etc etc. It's a Jayco type camper, quite small but built very tough.
Now if it's over 750kg's it needs to be inspected, if it's under we self assess.
On the rego form it says the "unlaiden" weight, so if we were to remove the beds and fridge and spare tyre it would be less than 750kgs and qualifies for self assessment. If it's over it needs to go to Zilmere, but do we tow an unregistered trailer to Zilmere to have it assessed, or does anyone know if we need a particular form or something to tow an unregistered trailer ? The Dep't Trans is closed now so I can't ask them. Friday afternoon the brake controller gets fitted and it's going to be tight to get home from that, grab the trailer, head out to Zilmere before the place shuts so we can head off Sunday for out trip away.
Any advice would be most welcome !!

Hi Sandyian,
Jayco should have a compliance plate stating unlaiden (or build) weight.
If this is 750KG or less then just do the self assessment form. This is what figure rego is based on.The Gross weight stated on plate is this weight plus what you can legally & safely load into camper. This weight will always vary with loading for trip.
As far as regulations go, if unloaded or loaded camper is greater than 750KG then brakes, either overide or electric are required. This is really important as can affect your camper as well as car insurance if involved in an accident.
If camper has electric brakes (most probably) you will need a Prodigy or similar inertial electronic brake controller installed in tow vehicle.
Hope this helps..B

Thanks Bruiser !!
The prodigy is fitted Friday afternoon, I couldn't find anyone that could fit us in earlier, but only made a few phone calls, tradies must get sick of tyre kickers ringing all day.
So can I tow an unregistered trailer to Zilmere (here in Bris) to have the inspection done or do a need a special form to allow me to do that ? I'll check the plate when it gets here, hopefully tonight, maybe tomorrow.
We almost bought a Jayco Hawke but decided on a more off road orientated one, quite a bit smaller but figured we wouldn't spend much time in it during the day anyhow and would rather tow a smaller lighter camper but have a larger annex so bought a Getabout camper. We'll soon find out if we did the right thing, or messed up !!

After a bit more research it seems once I fill out the rego paperwork I am legally allowed to tow it whilst unreg to an inspection facility, so that's good !! But I won't have a brake controller in my car until Friday afternoon so I guess I'll have to hope like crazy the trailer place gets the controller fitted in time for me to race back home, grab the trailer and head off to Zilmere. I get the Disco back about 4pm so it's going to be very tight !!!!! :o
