Hi all,
What is going rate/price for the 100k service. I don't use LR dealers - have a local bloker who seems to be quite good.
Just want an idea of what others have paid.

Only issues (l am aware of!)
- Handbrake cable need replacing (totally seized)
- Swivel seal leaking

Anything l should get check specifically??

My mechanic is great - he lets me supply all parts and he fits them.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/43220-danger-warning-crud-thats-not-right.html

my two threads on the one I did.

doesnt cover a lot of the little things that get done like

lubing hinges and slides
checking headlight alignment
tyre rotation

does cover all the things that took longer and some precautionaries for you.

cooling system hoses seem to last a preset time and not a K's distance

my back of the napkin stats show that time to be at the 5-6 year mark and then the hidden hose everyone forgets thats down below the exhaust port for pots 4+5 bulges and lets go.

Im a mite more pedantic about big services than some mechanics I know so not everything on the list has to be done.

Just wondering, if your mechanic is good (fair and just;)) why are you looking around? I changed one of my services to a dealer once, time and distance was the issue, found out the seal around the harmonic balancer was kaput so they replaced it for me. Well not 30 km's later my temp gauge shot up to the red and steam came pouring out from the bonnet. To cut a long story short they reused the old bolt, apparently you shouldn't, and it came loose. Hence no fan or brakes. Let's just say I abused the hell out of them!

Fair call.

Not rot really looking around as such. more that he is not a Rover Specialist - but very competant with the spanners. I just want to give him (if needed) a few things to check that might be 'Rover specific' l guess.

The truck is running well -- have had no problems. Want to keep it that way. He services quite a few TD5s (Discos mainly). So he is aware of some stuff - but as l have learnt over the years (had 3 Rovers) there are certain Rover 'matters' to be checked.

Thanks in advance.

Mike,

I would say that apart from the 40K interval major services, the WHEEL BEARINGS are neglected quite often in Defenders. D2's are sealed hub units, but the Defender still suffers from a lack of attention from what I have seen over the years. Interestingly the wheel bearing services aren't even listed in any Defender service schedules that I have seen, and should be serviced and the upgraded hub seals fitted at least every 80K, or more often in tropics or regular offroading activities that involve water and mud etc.

theres nothing uber secret about the defender TD5 its the last of the rover engines thats easy to do the full service on (unless you want to do the alternator or the full cooling system overhaul)

if hes good with the spanners grab a copy of the rave from the links on forum, read up and print the service schedule and then print out the relative bits from the main sections of the manual so they're ready to read on dead trees rather then in pixels format.

the worst of the issues you should come across all things being equal are listed in my threads.

If you use the vehicle in remote areas I STRONGLY suggest that you get it converted back to the double nut bearing configuration as opposed to the stake nut setup. Having to repair/replace a wheel bearing or stub axle will then be the usual simple technique as opposed to an annoyingly difficult one requiring you to find the right size spacer ring and then be delayed while you order one in.

I also suggest flushing the radiator and the intercooler as well as replacing the UJ's in the propshaft.

Thanks guys for that. Quite helpful indeed. I will get onto a RAVE CD for sure...
