Sounded like a bearing

Gday All,

Just recently serviced the td5 and have been trying to track down a water loss problem so removed the accustic cover..

Drove the car last night and when I stop and turned the car off for about 5 secs I heard what sounded like a bearing noise..Thought Turbo straight away..

Got SWMBO to drive the car up the street and back then turn it off whist I had all the covers removed and the bonnet up..

After many attempts with A/C on then Off and using a screw driver to listen to various parts recon its the centrifical filter..

My question is ..Does anyone else hear this noise or do I need to investigate further...The car drives fine, I even followed it to see if it blew smoke etc, but seems fine..

Any advice or suggestions would be great..

Is it a genuine filter? A couple of years ago there was a problem with aftermarket ones that rubbed.

It's just the centrifugal oil filter spinning down after the engine has stopped. It's driven by oil pressure, and can spin (I'm told) at up to 15,ooo rpm ...

Unless it's badly out of balance and vibrating like a <snip> ... it's nothing to worry about.

Yep, I'd be worried if I couldn't hear it.

If its a high pitched whine that sort of comes and goes not long after turning the engine off its the Oil centrifuge rotor slowing down. (It spins at up to 15000RPM) I hear it quite often on my TD5.

Quite normal to be louder after a service Ean,it gets quieter as time goes on.

it gets louder as its essentially just a hollow cup shaped thing made of tinplate.

as it does its job of collecting muck from the engine it pics up weight and lines itself so it vibrates less and spins slower.

Yep as stated normal. Some make more noise than others.

I used to think it an odd coincidence that an aeroplane was flying overhead every time I pulled in and shut down.!!:p
Different filter and now the noise isnt discernable unless I get out with the bonnet open and poke my head around the housing.
