May I test the wind?
I'm after an off-road (mainly sand) family vehicle to replace the Pajero (deceased) and before it County and Stage 1, for passenger and off-road camper towing.
Available locally:
2002 Defender Xtreme 100K $28,000
2000 Defender (base) 125K $22,000
1999 Patrol ST 4.2T 275K $18,000
I'd like to get the later Defender as from what I read here the post-2002 motors are slightly more reliable. But $6000 is a lot of money and the budget looks a lot better with the bare-bones 2000 model.
The Patrol is a wild card. I had a work DX 4.2 NA when this one was new, and I liked the motor. The price seems keen to my untrained eye.
What is the collective wisdom?

275k is a lot of kilometres!! I reckon the economic life of a vehicle is 300k - after that is overdraft. So if you buy a vehicle with 275k on it you've only got 25k left before you go into overdraft.

I keep trying to consider Disco's V8Ian. I just have an irrational love of the Defender shape. Total Square Land Rovers I have owned = 4. Total other Land Rovers = 0. The other small niggle is that I have an extensive collection of wheels to suit the Series/RRC/D1/Defender stud pattern, and the camper has hubs to suit.

Hmmm, disco 1 has the same stud pattern. But i suspect you would look at a D2.

I have seen Patrols that have been rebuilt (admittedly) at around 300k still running at over 550k. The price, if the vehicle is good, is about right.

I have. Tempting, but on the other hand I recently drove Toowoomba-Sydney and the thought of 12 hours drive to look at a vehicle and then possibly decide it's not the one for me, followed by 12 hours drive back
If I was closer I'd think harder about it, and also about the Perentie/Defender one of the yards in Sydney has.
IMHO your best value is a rollcage as you have so much invested in mods already; do you have a view on my question?

I'd be tempted by the lower spec 2000 TD5 Defender. As you say 6k is a fair saving. Just check it has been looked after properly.
Aloa's could be nice, Good spec, but he has possibly the worst picture I have ever seen in an advert.

I'm a little lost as to why the patrol is even in there...a) if you love landies...why does it even get a look in (not forgetting this is an LR forum so on the whole a given most are not going to be pro patrol for starters) and b) 275km's V 125Km's for base Fender.........you have 150,000 kms difference....is that not worth the $4k difference especially if you consider increasing maintenance and other issues with a vehicle with that sort of k's. Now I'm no expert as many could attest to....but I would have thought that reasonably obvious.
Lets say you do 150,000 kms.....the Fender will be at 275,000...the patrol at 425,000kms....so resale on the Fender should be better as well.

It's a good points, Stevo. Poor maths ability on my part? Mental $20,000 watershed? Anxiety about the TD5? - even here the Nissan 4.2 is well-respected. But you're right in terms of the milage and resale (and about the love of Landies).

I would be tempted by the lower defender or the patrol.
The td5 is easy to get power upgrades and plenty of mods for. If you love land rovers this would be the way to go.
If you are not too fussed about brand then 4.2 is a great engine and will do many more kms on top of the 275k. Turboed they are a really do go well. Bit of a slug with the NA(not that the defender )
I like the patrol for a simply reliability and minimal maintenence.
