Hi All

Been in hiatus for a while as we have moved permanently to our country property @ Herveys Range with no internet..........Anyway

Disco 2 2001 TD5 160000k service. Been quoted approx $2k by landrover (yeah right like I'm gonna do that) Ultratune usually about 3/4 of that.

Now, Having a huge shed and access to all my tools that have been in storage for years I figure that I can knock this back to just the essentials that need a workshop. Oils are obvious but what else is needed in this service?

Have tried to find info on the net but with zero results. Can anyone give me the list? I have all the LR workshop manuals and work on all the other farm machinery around the place so the practicalities should not be an issue.

Thought I may be able to trick LR into giving me a list but apparently it is 'proprietry information'.

Thanks Guys!

PS. Leased a new Navara diesel auto dual cab on salary sacrifice to do the commute to give the LR a rest. I know which vehicle I prefer to drive regardless of the cost and it doesn't come from Nissan!

2K???

a 160K is a 40K major interval service, all trans oils, service auto trans (If applicable) flush cooling system and brake fluid, change all filters, check EVERYTHING and report/ repair as required.

Basically, for an auto Td5 using genuine oil and fuel filters, and Synthetic engine oil and non specialist fluids and trans oils (IE mineral based and DOT 3/4 brake fluid) you should see about $850 to $900 at the most.

Obviously plus any other items like wiper blades, Belts, globes, brake pads/ discs, hoses etc etc.

I'd be lynched asking 2K for the 160K service:o

Even with an ACE system flush it'd be about $200 extra incl ACE filter.

(Edit: The D2 dosen't even have serviceable wheel bearings, the D1 160K gets a full wheel brg service and all hub seals replaced, adding about $300 to the bill, but it has no ACE and the oil isn't as expensive and only 1 engine oil filter)

The easiest way and a good method is to remove the bleeder plug in the top of the top radiator hose, run a hose into the reservoir and start engine. Leave running until water runs clear/ clean, and then refit plug and go for a drive/ warm it up until thermostat opens. Come back and allow to cool slightly, then repeat until water runs clean. This method ensures the complete radiator and hoses are flushed as the thermostat is closed to full rad flow when cool.
A bit wasteful on water though:( We have to drain as much out into a container through the bottom steel coolant line drain plug first to avoid washing too much coolant out onto the ground:(

Follow fluids link but add auto filter and air suspension filter if it is fitted

if your following a 15K service interval then its a big one as described.

if your following the 10K arduous environment schedule then its only a minor service with the big one having been done at 140K or 150K Km depending on which version of that schedule youve been following.

ID suggest that regardless of what youve been doing service interval wise that a Dealer would do it as a major service. Id hope that would be because theres no harm in overservicing (if you have good mechanics) but in reality it would probabley be because they can mark it up for more cash.

I live in darwin so we can use as much water as we like and with the rain we have been getting there aren't going to be water problems up here

That seems a bit steep even for our local dealer. I was quoted $900 ish 12 months ago for my 120000 km svc. I think they have given you the wrong price, if you can't be stuffed doing it yourself it might pay to give them another ring.

Here's the other Maintenance Check Sheet .... for all models from 02MY onwards (I believe in Oz that would be the facelift model).

The other Maintenance Check Sheet I posted further up this page is for all models 99MY to 01MY (Square headlights)

Hello everybody,

I am a recent convert to Discoveries and I love mine to bits after only 2 weeks of ownership. It is a 2000 model.

My first job was to give it the best wash and polish it has ever had.

Now to the maintenance jobs.

I will give it an oil change this weekend.
May I ask a few questions please?

1. I'm on a budget so can you recommend a value-for-money oil?
2. Ditto for filter. Which do you recommend?
3. A mate told me a Z9 filter fits. (He has a D1.) Is this true?
4. Any other tips re changing the oil will be value greatly.

Thanks in advance.

Diesel? Then:

1)Penrite Hpr diesel 5, don't go cheap you'll end up regretting it.
2)there are 3 filters to change.
Fuel, centrifugal & canister oil filters
Genuine centrifugal and cooperS for the others--- ring Rovacraft and speak to Stuart. Don't skimp here either!
3)on a petrol maybe, check their listing.
4)drive till warm, park downhill, loosen oil cap, remove sump plug and drain. Remove oil filters.
Fit new filters and sump plug (gentle on plug)
Fill to level.

Petrol:
Any good semi or full synthetic oil 10w40 or 10w50

Gday Skellz,

That sounds awefully expensive for the oils...or is that including all the filters..

Hi All
Do not forget to do the Serpentine belt and check the pulleys for wear if noisy replace on the 160000 service I did not tell my mechanic to do this and the idler bearing collapsed took out the belt and the harmonic balancer a very expensive repair for not following the service schedule. i usually print out the service sheet out of the rave CD and give it to him
Regards
Doug

I just did the 160 at 158 - so idler pulleys and tensioner; serpentine belt; oil change in all diffs and transfer case and transmission (manual mine); check all suspension and steering and brakes; radiator check - pressure and infra red gun for hot spots that might indicate blockage. Check radiator hoses - all good in this case (same for heater hoses) (10k ago I did a master cylinder re-sleeve and then full brake fluid flush and test book bleed - if that hasnt been done do that). I did coil packs, leads and plugs not long ago also. Oil and filter - Penrite HPR10 oil (!!!).

I think that was all.

Cheers

Thanks Kev, that is very useful. Any advice for my TD5 at 245K Km? Apart from the usual suspects like oil in the harness, engine mounts, 3 amigos, alternator etc I have not done any work on the engine.

Thanks

Just had the 160K service on my 2003 D2a TD5, at Gold City LR and was charged $424. It is on the 10K service pattern so was a relatively minor service, all filters and oil, degrease and change a couple of light globes. Filters and oil were abt $225.
