Oh dear i think this is going to hurt...Where to start
Well i have been on a pension for a few years now because i have AGROPHOBIA servere panic disorder.i have trouble going out to the point where i have locked myself in the bathroom in colds sweats with my heart in my throat thinking i would passout or pee or crap myself..i also have done this when i have had people coming over to visit or in this case (people offering to come & help )..it has ruined my life & my immediate family (wife & kids)..you know we used to go up to our local bush (hillsborough ) when we had a nissan SWB kids loved it but it sometimes could take me an hour to get there & we only live literaly 5 min drive from it..
its been realy hard for us because our families think its a big joke .they seem to think its funny to take the micky out of me ..but 27 years of abuse mentaly, physically, mentaly sexualy..
So i dont deal with people to well cause if i have to leave or (hide)as such they dont understand so we just dont do it but its now realy taking its toll on the wife & kids..
we had to file bankrupt a few years back now & the way this rover is going it could send us there again..wife (karen is realy worried )
i had a friend who i used to do stuff with because he didnt care that if we where going some where if i needed to turn round & head for home he didnt say anything i would just settle myself down & then turnround again & keep going & catch up to him & this could happen a few times before i got there & sometime i couldnt get there but he was ok with it so we got on real good but he went & died on me & i have taken it hard & since then i havent been able to do anything realy & we used to go bush alot just for the day out to sugarloaf & out the back of glendale & up hillsborough man i miss those days we all had fun me the kids & wife plus my friend..we used to work for ourselves i am a diesel mechanic by trade havent touched tools since i done my trade 20 years ago but we used to wash & grease trucks that kept us going was good money cause we used to do about 20 trucks a week..
Now the best i do is going down to the local shops again 5min drive away but i do go for a walk round aldi the cheap shops & the paper shop gotta get me rover mags..but this rarely happens .karen does all my running around picking up parts & the like..
i seem to get on better with woman the shrink says its because most of the abuse i suffered was from my father..
hence the reason we only see a few family members ..
we thought it bout time i told use as we have had offers of help with the car..
dont know how i would handle it..but if it wasnt for karen i know i would be dead she saved me..
the best thing so far is my kids..
& i have to say i have never found so many people to offer to help when they havent even met us ..thats cool.
i can only hope that when the car is sorted i can get some part of our life back & start going back to the bush...
So we would like to say many many thanks to everyone who has offered to help...
Not trying to be sobby just thought if use new the problem it mite make it easier to understand why i cant except the offers of help but i (we) really appreciate them i dont know how i would handle people here for the time it could take...
THANKS Jason & Karen..

Mate that took a lot to post that here, and I for one applaud your honesty and guts, well done:)
If there is anything I can do to help with parts etc, just PM, there's no danger of ME visiting, we're too far away, but I can still send stuff:)
Keep moving ahead, and your other half and kids are a tower of strength and inspiration, well done as a family:)
Take care,

Man, that took a HEAP of courage, you must be feeling pretty low at the moment and felt the need to get things off your chest. Is'nt it strange how some people can breeze through life, with very few problems as in they have a happy childhood, get married to a wonderful partner ( you sound like you have achieved that, mate with a great wife!), have a great job/career, the kids grow up and have successsful careers.
Mate, trust me, I can associate a lot with what you have said, as in:
1) Cruel father, mine used to beat the crap out of mum.
2) Bankruptcy, been there done that and still trying to recover even though it was ten years ago.
3) First wife dying at the age of 27 from a massive asthma attack leaving me with two kids aged six and one. This was in 1974 so it was some time ago.
4) Diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2004, I have recently been given the all clear, but it was very draining going through chemo and radio therapy.
Mate, I guess what I am trying to say, some of us get dealt a lousy deal in life's game of cards and it seems as soon as you get over one problem another surface's.
I can't help you with parts for your Landy, having trouble with mine at the moment too, (aarrgghh) as I am not too mechanically inclined. But unlike other forum users I only live ten minutes away, so if you need somebody to talk too, I can help in that department.
I know Aldi and the cheap shops at Cardiff well.:):)

You need to change the title of the thread to "Guts and Courage"...mate, only those that have really been in a position such as yourself can empathise with what you are going through. I am one of those, and still am suffering from the same things you do and more. Only problem is, I have no support from my ex- spouse - she walked out on the kids and I.
I can offer no advice....panic attacks are one of the most debilitating things that can happen to someone...just surround yourself with those that love you, communicate through forums such as this, trust your medical team and continue on your treatment plan - be it CBT, desensitization etc...good luck mate.

Jason,
I read your post and understand your situation; my heart goes out to you and Karen.
My wife has had agoraphobia for 25 years. While its severity changes over time, depending on what's happening in our lives, its always there. Right now we can travel reasonably easy around the suburb but anything beyond that is a major exercise involving mental preparation and planning, and Xanax.
Going somewhere and having to turn around, lying to people about the reasons for not going to parties and functions, making excuses, not being able to maintain friendships (Bit hard to invite people over if you can reciprocate right?), yep been there done that, still there now. The people thing is most difficult aspect I think; if you're a good liar like me, people eventual think you're either antisocial or just plain don't like them, so they stop contacting you, when in reality the opposite is true. Even good friends lose patience or interest after a while.
I could write more but that'll only depress you and me even more, so hang in there is all I can say.

My mother had agoraphobia. from memory it started when I was around 6 or 7 years old. A single parent bringing up two kids with agoraphobia would of been pretty hard and reading your story made me reflect on my own. She wouldn't leave the house etc. I used to do the shopping on my bike when I was around 11 years old. She had a good friend that used to drop in for a coffee on a regular basis which helped alot I think. The turning point for her was two women came to stay with us from some agoraphobia group. I don't know why they came to stay with us, whether they helped Mum or really what the full story was but she gradually improved. It started in little steps where she could drive to the shops. There were times she would start to panic and would ask me to talk to her on the way home. Occasionly she didn't get to the shops. However, she got to the point where she could drive perhaps up to a 15 km radius from home. One time we went to Yamba for a holiday which involved a 2 day trip on a train. Whether she suffered any attacks or not only she would know. She passed away when I was 14 (thats about 20 years ago) so I can't ask her about it :( .
I doubt she fully recovered but got to a point where it didn't create too much of a problem. I beleive she helped others with agoraphobia as a contact or councellor spending time on the phone talking to others.
Searching google came up with Agoraphobia (http://www.tne.net.au/~swag/) Whilst I don't think the name is the same as the group that helped mum the symbol looks familiar so maybe they had a name change.
Being young at the time I never fully understood. But I reckon Families are good. All the best and thanks for sharing your story.

Banjo, I always thought (rightly or wrongly) that the key to controlling this thing is desensitisation. To explain; there was a time early on when I thought someone or something would come along and cure this thing in SWMBO, or that she'd grow out of it over time (she was 22 when it first started, 47 now). Neither happened. My theory was that if she put herself through trigger situations she would eventually overcome it.
More recently I've come to accept (not like, not happy, but accepting) the fact that she'll always have it and so I've modified my theory, from desensitisation to "confidence". My theory is that she slowly but frequently (say every weekend) hop in the car with others (me and the kids mainly) and drive somewhere. Working up from just round the block, to the local shops, to a park, down the coast, etc. My idea being that she build confidence in her ability to deal with the symptoms (by this I mean stay in control) through preparation and self-monitoring.
Like all things mental though, it works when you're feeling happy, well and confident, but can be a major setback if you "fail".
Recently this approach has seen some improvement but there's years of work ahead of her.
I'm blabbering on about all this to simply say "good on ya" for getting out. Keep doing it! Panic attacks won't kill you (Easy for me to say!) but you can draw some satisfaction in doing these things, and hence the confidence for next time. No doubt you'll say "where's the achievement? Anybody else does this without thinking about it". True, but what other people can do or not do doesn't help you, does it?
I've read the above a couple of times and I'm not sure the tone is right but its meant to be happy and helpful.
Anyway, cheers.

Hi Mark just read what you said & i wouldnt take anything you say as sarcasim or malice as you are dealing with the same problem...i only put it up here that i went out because of the positive feedback i was given by all ,this is the first time i have let anyone know about it with the exception of peter haylock (the guru) from kotara if it wasnt for karen & the guru i would never have got this car done..
i will keep posting on here when i manage to go out as the feedback is helping & by just letting everyone on here know has been of great help to build confidence in myself so karen says since telling on here i have tried to push myself a little bit as i would love to be able to go 4x4 ing with some of use at some stage & possibly camping..
PSSSSSSSSSSSS whats a SWMBO i am sure it meens wife ..
ps i have just come back from picking up our papers & pamphlets just to prove to myself i can deal with the heat well sort of by the time we got back i was drenched the damn tablets do this to me i can dehydrate in minutes..
i am more worried the car wont start since it did it to karen that should be fun if or when that happens dont know how i will handle that ,but i still drive it i wont drive karens 4runner that would be easy ....:D
now i have to sit for about 6hrs & fold the papers & pamphlets sounds like fun hey ,,,,NOT but it does put fuel in the cars for us....

You're showing a lot of courage just by posting here - well done. I don't have any personal contact with this problem so reading this certainly helps my understanding.
I did have one moment of panic standing on a really busy street corner in Bangkok several years ago feeling very overwhelmed by it all, but I'm not sure if thats the same thing as you're talking about.
Does being able to communicate using the Internet without leaving home make it easier?
Keep going - most people are actually sympathetic I think once they understand this is real.

Good luck and God bless you both,,,keep up the good work,,:)

i think its just the male thing i have trouble with as most of it came from my father...
KAREN has come up with a novel idea if anyone is interested,I use to text my friend all the time allday till he died ,i still cant belive he went & done that silly old bugga..he was in his 70s i spose..
anyway karen said why not text people for a while see where it gets me & build some friendships build some trust..

Hey Banjo
Have you ever tried Hypnotherapy? not sure how well it works with Agoraphobia, but I had a terrrible fear of flying which was getting to the panic attack stage, which was a bugger because I have to fly a lot for work. I went to see a Psychologist who practises hypnotherapy, it didn't cure me immediately but I got progressively better from that point on and now I actually enjoy flying.
Just make sure if you do try it to use a qualified psychologist as there are a fe wdodgy hypnotherapists out there with suspect qualifications.

Hey Banjo, this thread is fantastic and reading through it we can all see just a hint of a smile on that mystery face I'm sure.
My wife suffered this sometime ago and she ended up learning to cope with it in much the same way you are. We found that setting a SMALL goal for the day every day worked wonders. She had many setbacks though...many a time I'd get a call to go and fetch her from somewhere or whatever. Try to keep the sense of humour too.
Your wife is a wonderful lady, and the kids too.
BTW, after about a year of this, she was able to let go of the drugs and has been great for the last 15 years now although she does suffer depression which she takes treatment for.
Good luck mate. Hope we meet in the bush one day.

JC
When we lived on Norfolk Island we often left keys in the ignition - as did many others.
One night I drove my wife's car to the airport to see off a visitor. When I got home, my wife asked where was her car. "In the driveway", I replied.
She then told me that wasn't her car. It wasn't. :( Same brand, different model - a Corolla. Ours was a Starlet.
So back to the airport to swap it for our car.

They say a trouble shared is a trouble halved. Thanks for having the G&D to share yours. If us sharing it has gone someway to halving it for you then the site has given us all darn good value.

A little insite as to how jason has got to the stage he is uptill i got with him & after i got with him.
when he was of crawling age he was smashed in the head by a sledge hammer as his father was a truck driver & had his own trucks & was fixing his trailer boards with him crawling around on it.thats what hes been told..
when he was about 5 or 6 his grandad dropped a claw hammer off the roof of the house sconed him in the side of the head & shoulder..
when he was 7 or 8 his parents thought it was time for him to read where did i come from cause they made his sister read it so they made him go to their room & read it but after about 10 or 15 mins at it his old man screamed at him to ask questions about it because his sister had read it & couldnt understand it so he wouldnt be able to either so they made him talk about it & ask questions.....(in depth)..
All the time telling him you never talk back to your elders & especially your parents,,,,that was told to him over & over till it brainwashed him..
when he was about 9 they used to strip him off then put him out a window naked & lock the house up except the front door so he had to run round the front so everyone could see him butt naked & screeming to get in.(they must of thought it was entertaining)...
then his parents split when he was 12 or 13 he was left alone for awhile as he lived with his mum & stepdad...
BUT his father got hold of him again when he was staying over every second weekend & eventually talked him in to beliving that his mother wanted him to leave & live with him..
As soon as that happend he was made to work so he could bring in more money to support his fathers sex & drinking habit i think
His father sat jason & his stepbrother down at the table for a sexual talk & when finished gave them both a rubber & said try these, they both threw them out & about a week later his father went right off his tits because they never came back to tell them how they used them or what they thought about them in detail..so his stepbrother left to live with his dad after that..thats a weird story just there as 2 couples knew each other & just swaped wives.so he knew his step brother & sisters before they became his steps..
jason used to date a larger girl at this time & his father & step mum thought jason said she was older thats why he never asked her over so they said they could show him how to treat an older woman as in do this & do that so that girl didnt last long he got rid of her before they could do anything to him or her..
there is a lot more that happend back then but thats all i know as he doesnt talk about that time ..
Then i came along that didnt go down well as i took jasons attention away from him...
So his father would get out his stick magz when i was there & say hey look at these then he would think jason & i would tell him bout our sex life .NOT..
but then i found out he would blow up at jason bigtime because we wouldnt tell him in detail what we where up to..
Then jason & i where in a car smash jason was hurt & was supposed to take time off work but no they made him go when he got there the boss asked him where his car was & he told them what happend ,They sent him home because they didnt want him to hurt himself more & make life bad for them,,when he got home his father went off big time again what the f are you doing home he told them what work said & all his dad said was well that bitch ain,t coming over if you are home because your hurt.mind you he poped his sholder out & broke 4 ribs & busted his wrist in the smash T boned in a mini,,,so his father got him to help work on his sisters car (mini) with busted gearbox so it had to come out no tools for the job just lifted it out...
Then we decided to move out.. well that went down like a lead balloon, as long as its not that bitches idea he said to jason..
So we moved out but jason still ran after them till he was about 26 or 7 because he had been brainwashed to think he had to...then we had kids & all changed we cut ties with his parents & have been working through it since then.. now at 38..So the kids had seen this for bout 6 years..
Anyway thats just a little bit of how he is why he is nowdays, there is a lot more to tell but this will help you all understand how it all came about...
THANKYOU KAREN
I stuck with him because ,well you can work that out we have been together for 22 years now..
you know once he sees this he will go & hide cause he will be thinking what if someone on here knows his father & goes & tells him,,Well i dont give a flying fruit let them..thats just another part of his problem.
PS say what you like bout the red head in the photo i will just give it back twice as much...:wasntme:

Jason and Karen,
I commend both of you for your courage and openess in discussing what you both have throughout this thread. I think there is no need for embarrassment, I wish I could be just half as strong and resilient as both of you sound as though you are.
In regards to the background info you posted a couple of days ago Karen, I admire the strength it must have taken for you to keep sticking around for Jason, you sound like 2 amazing people who definitely seem great for each other. I can understand a little what it would feel like to have been through all that you both endured, as my cousin (same age as me) went through a very violent upbringing, fueled with alcohol, drugs and sex, and in many ways not too disimilar to what you described, although I recognise every case is individual, and Jason's certainly sounds a bit worse.
At the end of the day, you are both amazing people, who have done a fine job of making a great life together, and I can only wish both of you the best of luck in continuining to make progress together, and I would like to thank you both, you've certainly inspired me as to what the stregth and power of humanity can be.

Nice Land Rovers Jason:cool:
Maybe you could think about a little tour in the bush, I'm probably a little too far, but I'm sure there is a few Sydney/Newcastle guys/gals that would be happy to join you for a day in the bush. No need to say yes or no but when you feel like it just let it be known that you are keen and I'm sure you'll get a couple of takers who know that area well.
I recall driving north from Wiseman's Ferry in the 1980's on a nice track - (Someone help me here:D) - but I'm sure there are lots of other fun tracks in your area.
Another thing I'm sure would be of interest to many of the series drivers here is your power steering set up - Maybe you could post up a few photos of your setup. You could start a new thread on this subject if you feel like it. I'm sure you'll get some interest.
Anyway, I'm enjoying reading your thread and echo bblazes comments.

G'Day again Jason, I put a posting in earlier on about life dealing some people lousy cards to play with, then I thought I had better back off as you really don't need to hear my life's story and problems on top of your own even though I have also been through a lot I don't suffer as badly as you do,though I do get down in the dumps when bad memories overwhelm me at times, you really don't need to hear about my problems when you have enough for several people.
I then had a look at your mebanjo site, MMMAATTE, what you are doing with your beloved Landies is incredible, keep it up I am impressed, being a local I recognise the houses in the background at Cardiff where you live but there is no way I would impose myself on you. I hope to meet you on Stockton Beach or some other place someday, thats if I can get my bloody Freelander going again.
By the way as far as age is concerned, I am an old bloke, in my 60's.:D:D

G'Day mate, love yer Landie. Yeah I live at Cameron Park and my Freelander is at the local mechanics at Edgeworth, though it should by now be at ALL4X4 having the ECU problems sorted out. Seriously thinking about getting rid of it as the transmission is sure to fail now because coolant has gotten into it and this no doubt will cost big dollars on top of the big dollars I am expecting to pay for what has been done so far. the Freelander suited us because the wife didn't want a large fourby to manouvre around shopping centre car parks. Which means, sadly we go back to a conventional car. Would like to get a Disco 2 TD5 but she who must be obeyed says, "too big". We can only afford one car and it must be a reliable one as my wife's elderly parents are still alive and need transport for medical appointments and to do the weekly shopping.
It really is a shame because bodywise the Freelander is in excellent condition and as far as I can tell has never been offroad, thats why we bought it, but unfortunately I didn't do enough research before I bought it (I knew the petrol 1.8's where a money pit, but I didn't realise the V6's are also bad news) I should have bought a diesel.:( I am much wiser now but sadly I am going to be much poorer.:(

hey aus peter haylock is pretty good it mite not be to expensive..i use to have a 308 holden with a turbo 400 auto box it got full of coolant from radiator split twice the first time we changed out the radiator & flushed the box 6 times..we filled it up with fluid drove it for 20 min using all gears then changed the fluid & it was fine..the second time wasnt so lucky but when we pulled it out we had a look after striping out .we just fully manualised it, put in new seals filters & it never had a problem after that also put a custom rad in it..
Once you get the ECU sorted you mite be able to flush it a few time & change the filters & it mite be ok...
We cross our fingers for you..
but if use do sell before you buy something take your wife & get her to drive a disco & take her to a carpark to try..She mite be ok & if you dont lift it your inlaws should be able to get in..
we have a very elderly couple a few doors down that we help they treat our kids like grandkids & the kids call them granny & sandy....

She uses a small step to get into the Freelander so I think for that reason alone she might have problems getting into a Disco.:) I have all sorts of advice from the tranny WILL fail right through to what you are saying, in other words flush it several times and change the filter!!!!

Sorry 'bout the hijacking, but ...
Ausfree. Take your wife out and MAKE her drive a D2 AUTO TD5.
My wife said the same thing. The D2 was the second choice on the list, because we were getting a Subaru Forester!! (nice car actually:) ) ...
Anyway, when we were looking at the Subi', I happened to comment when we lifted the tailgate that "there's NO way I can fit a guitar in this boot!" ... that started the ("no sweetheart, it wasn't an arguement!" :) ) ... _discussion_ about the D2. We took a couple for a drive and she was sold!
It's wheelbase is SHORTER than a commodore/falcon or larger jap passenger vehicle. It's WAY smaller than a Landcrusier/Patrol etc ... It's not as big as you think.
Seriously, get her in one.

Hey Jason and Karen and WhiteD3 and Gillie, my heart goes out to all of you. I have a partial understanding of what you're enduring as my 18 year old son (I'm 50) has had OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) now for around 3 - 4 years. It can be a real strain on a family and to have support from those you love is vital and you're lucky to have it. Talking to you specifically there Jason, and the others (D3 and Gillie) are saints for providing support as they have for their families. I think this thread in particular is indicative of the support and love we feel for you, even though most of us don't know you in person. It has to be the most quickly subscribed thread I've read here; so many responses and support in such a short time. I can't believe I missed it. I agree with all those positive comments from so many and you are truly braver than you realise. Great to see the mug shots, too. Always good to put a face to the name. The way the mind controls us, all of us, is such a strange thing. Why do some people get depressed, etc when others don't? Jason, I think you've got some damn good reasons for your "condition", for want of a better word. Mate, given what I've read about your childhood you're doing really well to where you are now, so you really are a survivor and fighter. Jason, if it were any other condition I'd be there in a heartbeat to help, but obviously that won't help here, will it?! You're already taking huge steps in your own self help and treatment just by starting this thread and then maintaining it; it shows true courage and committment. In fact, I'm in awe of you; truly, cos I don't think I'd have the same level of courage. I sincerely take my hat off to you; and it's a big hat! :) BTW, sexy beast of a truck. What other vehicle of the same vintage can look that good. Oh, apart from our wives of course. lol. As with all the others, I offer my help and encouragement if you ever need it.
cheers Gerald

to everyone again thanks to pirasea my heartfelt best wishes to you and your family i know how hard it is for you all for someone so young who is just starting to experience life and trying to live with ocd .... it just shouldn't be last year at the beginning our daughter started little things that started ringing alarm bells big time in my head she was obsessed with cleanliness everywhere her room was always spotless cause she was always cleaning it she'd wear socks inside the house and leave them in her doorway when she went into her room she was forever washing her hands then up to her elbows so bad that skin dried ou thands started cracking and bleeding it scared me so much doctors were trying to help she kept telling us theres nothing wrong finally got her to understand there was started to see a child psycologist it took a lot of time and a lot of visits she got worse before better she stopped goin to school started having panic attacks they talked about giving her a special exception to be home schooled because she missed so much and i fought for her she was only 14 and there was no way why i had breath in me that i was goin to give up and let her be ruled by this what kind of life can they have locked inside a house afraid to go anywhere that was all i could see of couse this was tearing at jason to he wanted us to split up because he saw this as his fault because we were told that micayla's was a learned response she had friends life was is as normal as we can make it no major issues at school she was and is well liked we slowly got her back to school 1 lesson at a time she had a special pass so she could leave class an go up to an unused room in the office when she needed to i was told we just need to find a balance and learn to live with small things they need to do that aren't extreme so the hand washing is now not so bad the socks in her doorway i can live with that she is now back at school fulltime still has some little things there she doesn't like using the school toilets they to unclean she is allowed to use toilets in office otherwise i don't think she would go all day the school helped i guess i'm trying to say i feel for you it will get better hopefully he has learnt this to to balance what he feels he needs to do i wish you all the best.....karen or fatty whatever makes you laugh

Hey ausfree how did you get on the the clatons i mean freelander .has it been upto kotara or have you got it back..
Yeah, its sitting down at All4X4, problems with the ECU are sorted, will truck it back to Edgy on Monday for the mechanic to flush out the radiator and then I will have to get the tranny flushed out also. Woko reckons there is a good place at Maitland that worked on the tranny of his brothers Freelander, so I will give them a ring next week. I am starting to get fed up with the whole thing, Freelander has been off the road for a month now, which is unbelievable.:mad:
Drove past your place today saw your nice green Landy in the driveway, unfortunately I was on a tight time schedule so I couldn't stop. However if an old bloke walks up one day and says "gooday Jason" it'll probably be me.:)

A little bit more insite, jasons bigest fear is throwing up when he was a kid if any of the kids got sick their father would say have something to eat or eat your tea you will feel better then would go off at them for wasting when they where sick, work that out.even now if he is sick the whole neighbourhood knows.when we first started dating we where never allowed to go out we allways had to go where they were going..when his grandmother died we went to the funeral but for jason to get there we left 4hrs before to get there on time & he couldnt eat for 2 days before incase he felt sick..
His second bigest fear would be the dentist he has bad teeth when he was younger if he got a tooth ache they just said take a panadol or would say put some gloves on it to numb it not take them to a dentist..well to make things worse he had to have a tooth pulled about 16 years ago the dentist said only take 10 mins & he was rude as ,jason had a panic atack & the dentist just got ****ed off so that made it worse & took 2 & half hours to get the tooth out ,it was a bad tooth but not that bad .well when we left jason had a cracked jaw serverely cut gum & no stitches we couldnt stop the bleeding & when i rang the dentist back he just said to rinse it out with some peroxside..he couldnt eat for three days had to suck bex up threw a straw for the pain, hence he will not go back to a dentist..
jason used to work for balcombs scrap metal & had an account at the garage across the road to get fuel & grub he liked his pie at 4 in the morning, they told him never have an account,,,well one night he game over for t at my place we where doing the dishes & his father rang up abused the hell out of him & told him to get home ,they where going threw his draws & found his account blew the **** out of him over it..mind you he had had it for about 2 years & paid it in full every friday, they where just ****ed off cause it was money they could of had..
he allso has in the front of all our cars an old icecream container incase his sick its a comfort thing if it helps him get out i dont care what he has in there.
he missed our kids birth because his mum wouldnt let him drive as we didnt have a car at the time & she only had a 2 door little mazda 323 but she wouldnt let him drive so he didnt have to be in the back seat with no way out or feel in control if he was driving..thats all he wanted but na your not driving my bloody car she said..ah well not the end of the world..
He also worked at the old solo servise station on bluegum road jesmond he was on very minimal wages but he got his fuel for free & had acsess to the work shop & towtruck when ever he wanted well parents would say we mite borrow your car tomorow but never said for definite that was what they wanted just mite well he got up to go to work no note on the table to say we need your car so he went to work well he got it when he got home though because he took the car & didnt walk from marylands to jesmond.plus they would come in when he was at lunch & fill their car up & tell the boss to put it on his tab but jason wouldnt say anything as he knew he would of got the **** blown out of him if he did...so he just left it..

Here here matti4556, mate I agree with everything you've said. Also why are my words being underlined?????
Whats funny Jason and Karen, is that, I've found over the years, the more people you talk to the more people and families you find who have problems like yours, or have strange medical problems or have the so called dysfunctional families. I fact, it's probably the norm. A perfect family is hard or almost impossible to find. An old school mate of mine who I'd always thought had grown up in the perfect loving country style family (kinda reminded me of the John Denver rocky mountain high style of family) turned out to be full of backstabbing and loathing for each other and fighting over family assets. I'm not saying in any way, shape or form that your family is like that; I guess I'm trying to say, hey even those families that appear "perfect" have problems and in fact may well be hiding their problems.

Hi again Jason and Karen, thanks for replying; forgot to say that earlier. From what I've read of the replies from both of you I reckon it's time you told these "knockers" in your family and close friends to get *&%$ ed". But I guess someone has already suggested that to you. Family and friends provide support, not ridicule! Thanks for your empathy regarding my son, but hey you're going through that and some, eh? When I read about Micayla, I thought "welcome to my world"; almost exactly the same problem, you'd think they were the same person. All the same problems. In fact, yesterday I bumped (accidentally brushed against) into my son twice and he had to strip off all his clothes, have a shower both times and put on new clothes (twice). AAARRRGGGHHHH! Also, let me tell you that whoever told you that Micayla's behaviour was a learned response needs a kick up the datehole. It's usually stems from anxiety. Obviously, Jason has more than enough pent up anxiety but Micayla's won't come from copying her father. So don't blame yourself Jason. Believe me, we're living with it right now. My son took Zoloft for a while (but unfortunately has stopped) and it did him and us the world of good when he was on it cos he became really relaxed, things just stopped worrying him as much and his mood changed from aggresive to passive and he became quite pleasant company. Heard of it?

Thanks for your kind thoughts, Pirasea, without trying to hijack Banjo's thread, Bowel Cancer is a terrible ailment that can sneak up on you without noticing, I am now a strong advocate of anybody over 50 ( I'm 64) having a colonoscopy every five years or so. Banjo, again i don't want to hijack your thread but after reading right through everything that has happened I might tell you a bit about my experiences with my father, I hope this helps.
Being older than you I was a little tacker in the 1950's and Dad would go to the pub of a Saturday afternoon and come home drunk and of cause mum would have a go at him for being away so long and that of cause would set him off, in front of me (bearing in mind I was about 6 to 8 years old) he would bash the living daylights out of mum, she would be laying on the floor crying and he would sit on her and still bash her, I used to scream out "Stop it, Stop it", I would run out of the house and hide either up behind the garage (for hours at a time, wasn't game to come back inside) or go down to my grandmothers place who lived two doors away.
I had a younger brother who is 6 years younger than me, and after the usual Saturday afternoon thump up I could hear my brother cying in his cot. Mum was bashed up, she couldn't help and Dad was prowling around the house in a drunken stupor and I was hiding up behind the garage in my usual spot. My brother kept crying so I sneaked into the house picked him up (luckily Dad didn't see me) and ran down to Grandma's place. She would usually feed us and let us play down there until things calmed down at home.
Dad fought with all his neighbours, even built an eight foot high fence around the yard and put barbed wire on the top, it was like living in a state of constant seige. The bus stop was at the front gate and the schoolkids used to site on the fence waiting for their bus, doing no harm and he told tyhem to p**s off, so he placed barbed wire on the front fence so the kids couldn't sit on it.
Dad never laid a hand on me (I was/am an asthmatic and I think that helped) but I remember my older brother copping some beltings, as a matter of fact my father kicked my elder brother out of the house at the age of sixteen.they never reconciled until my elder brother was thirty.
Dad did get off the grog in the early 60's and he never touched mum after that but he still remained argumentative/bad tempered/every body else is a mongrel/ distant to us.
Dad died at the age of 97 in 2007 and he was estranged from the entire family, the last time I saw him was in 1998. Not one family member attended his funeral, mainly because he didn't contact us to say he was sick, I know my younger brother (My older brother died in 2003) and myself would have been by his bedside if he had of contacted us, but as he got older he became worse in his atitude and in the end we couldn't take anymore so we slowly stopped visiting him to be constantly abused.
I have constantly asked myself the Question, Why are people like that?
By the way we found out about the funeral in the paper the day after.:( In his Will, Dad left his entire estate to a woman he met after Mum died in 1994, the family got nothing.
Banjo, I hope my experiences help you, and I could also talk about the biggest setback in my life, the day my first wife died and the devastating effect on the family that had, or I can talk about the step-son doing drugs and the battle we had on that front ( didn't mention that one before) he is your age and we now joke about a permanent cell with his name on it at Cessnock Jail, its a revolving door with him doing drugs, stealing, dealing drugs, robbery you name it:mad:

hey seano not sure where will end up hopefuly stay here somewhere as the kids dont want to change schools plus the young fella just started high school.we was looking up your way but its to close to my mother & 2 sisters. mother lives at lougth park ,one sister lives at ashtonfield & the other live at metford i could live near sister at metford but not the other 2..plus fattys family have just moved up to metford aswell.
not only that we dont have a bond ,we do with this realestate but you cant interchange (transfer) to another realestate.
so it will have to be something that this realestate has for offer..
unfortunatly everytime they do this we seem to get all there houses that realy need cleaning up the last one we where in had old chook run lawn hadnt been mowed for i dont no how long ,when we moved in here we thought we had to get weelie bins ended up finding them uder the grass on there sides.didnt even know we had fences till we cleaned the place up..

Been enjoying this thread but haven't posted much. I admire you guys for getting on with life despite everything.
I'm in my 50s and in Brissie so you won't see me driving past.
Nice Landy, by the way.
My wife had a depression breakdown a while back and it took her a while to get back on top. She's good most of the time, but knows when she's getting edgy and takes action to beat it. Thats not the same situation as yours, but I guess it shows most of us are a bit fragile in some way. You're not alone.
The granddaughter is a bit obsessive and showed some behavoural problems at school, but we've put it down to a combination of confusion and repressed feelings about her parents getting divorced, plus her IQ is about 4 years above her age, so we think she's just a bit bored sometimes at school. Love and caring seems to be the best treatment.
Incidentally, Ausfree, my wife loves driving our Disco, which has power steering and is easy to park (except in low parking stations). She's short but the side steps help her in. So I'd certainly get your wife to give a Disco a try, if I were you.

Used to have a SIIA many years ago. 4cyl petrol. Got it balanced and fitted extractors as I was sick of cracking manifolds every time I crossed a creek. Went like the clappers but felt as if it was a gear short. It had Rover diffs both ends, no Salisbury, bolted in Rover 90 (sedan) diffs which changed it from about 4.7 to 4.3 from memory. Was a real cheap half a gear upgrade. Though you could get 'Fairy" overdrives which bolted on to the back of the transfer case which gave you a proper extra gear. Maybe someone on the forum can point you in the right direction.

Like you, most us go on living with it and not really talking about it. Apart from you condition I reckon you're a lucky man having a chick like fatty. Sounds like a bit of a wild child to me - lots of fun.
As for the disco drivers , yeah, I find most of them don't wave (probably apart from those on this site) but the series drivers do - cool. It's great, eh? Keep ya chin up mate.

Not a happy chappy at the moment, got the Freelander back today after spending $1600:eek::eek: the mechanic admitted he caused the problem with the ECU and he wore the cost to All4X4 for the repairs to the ECU plus the cost for a tow truck to take the car there and back. Spoke to Bob Hunt Auto's at Maitland about flushing out the Auto box, which they will do, but the bad news is its only a matter of time before the box fails. the cooling system will have to be flushed again as I have just come back from looking at the coolant and it still has sludge in it. The mechanic did say it will have to be flushed again, and its only a matter of time before the rubber hoses all fail because of contact with the tranny fluid.
I am sitting here having a beer at the moment drowning my sorrows.

Mite of been cheaper maybe to replace the radiator & flush the auto a few times. or get a radiator out of a manual & run a separate auto cooler. To repair the radiator they would have to pull it apart to try & seal the bottom tank & that never works..wonder what a new rad would be worth ????

Hey, Buddy having people going through YOUR house when the owner wants to sell it. Its like an invasion of YOUR privacy. About 15 years ago we rented for about two years and the while we were looking to buy in the Cameron Park area, the owner said, through the agent, "not a problem with a rental of about 18 months, no worry", 6 months later the mongrel said "sell" and we had to move, my wife was soooooo stressed out with people coming through the house all the time. She went for a walk each time people came, she was so angry.
Its a very stressful time for you mate and my thoughts are with you and Karen, hang in there mate, think happy thoughts, better times are ahead.
Drove past your place this afternoon, had to drop some people off over in Cardiff South and of cause, past your place is the shortest way back to base. Looked out for you, but you must have been delivering your pamphlets.

Actually, you are quite observant, Banjo, the avatar is the Landrover logo on my Freelander behind the rear door, the colour is the most common one in freelanders, it is called white/gold which doesn't show real well in photo's. My Freelander is a bit different in that it has 17" wheels with low profile tyres, ideal for road work, not real good in the rough. I will see if I can bring a photo up.

Banjo, 14 years ago at the end of December my wife went into labour, 4 weeks early. I phoned the local doctor who told me to take her to hospital (40 miles away). It had snowed over Christmas a lot then froze so the roads were like glass. We headed of in the 90 Turbo diesel. I drove the 40 miles with the centre diff locked. 8 miles to go and my wife was kneeling on her seat into the back of the 90. I knew things were getting tight. Is that tears in my eyes or rain on the windscreen? Flick the wipers and it is not rain. We finally reaced the hospital. The 90 was red when we left home now it was white with frost. 30 minutes from hitting the car park the new addition to the family was in my arms. Cutting it tight was not the word for it.
Our new daughter turned out to have special needs. She was whisked to to the maternity ward and placed into an incubator and wired up like a Christmas tree. My wife decided she was not leaving without our daughter as she was trying to feed her. Everyday my other daughter and I made the 80 mile round trip to visit. One month later we moved up to stay near the hospital. I was taught how to feed our new daughter through a tube which I inserted through her mouth into her stomach. I was told to make sure I did not put it into her lungs by mistake. How will I know I asked? She will go blue I was told. Take it out and start again I was told.
Anyway about a month later we all got home to our own house. Later on in life we almost lost our youngest daughter owing to medical mixups. She suffered and we suffered but we survived. Then there is the constant fighting with health services and educational services over what is best for our daughter. Yes there were dark times and probably will be again. The future is out there but day by day does us. Our daughter is now 14, happy, beautiful and a bundle of joy. Definately life can be hard at times but it has it's rewards. Wish you well on your road ahead.

Hey UAS is the freelander back home & running all right now.. Yeah mate, got home about half an hour ago. You should have seen the strawberry icecream that came out of the tranny, flushed 20 litres of fluid through it, and its running like a dream, but it is only a quick fix, Bob Hunt said it will fail before long, so he is going to price a replacement box. He checked the Intermediate Reduction Drive Unit which I was worried about and it was fine.
Have the car booked in next Thursday, for a chemical flush of the coolant system, do you want to come for a drive? It is booked in at Maitland for 8am and will take about 4 hours, so if you want to come I will pick you up about 7am.:D:D

Ah well managed to go out for a little while today.went to get the pamphlets got there gate locked thats ok had the combo for the lock but someone had locked the big shed ah well get them on monday..So i just went down to cardiff & home again better than not going out at all i spose..
Fatty called in at the realestate today & seen the head guy of the rental department & he said he would find us a place as we have been with them for about 15 years he said he would look after us,said they have a unit coming up that mite suit us...Not sure if the other members of the unit block would take to kindly to me building stuff in the shed though..But he said if its no good he would still find us something.he said he would personly look for us .
Just got a phone call from the high school cody is light headed so fatty's gone to get him..
Hope its not his passing out spells he has had before as i mentioned on here somewhere before,he kept passing out & looked dead i nearly started CPR on the last one he had ..
He says hes been playing leauge at school & i hope that doesnt have antthing to do with it as he just signed up for footy at glendale..
If its not one thing it another..
Hoping i mite be able to get out over the weekend will just have to wait & see..
fatty said i shouldnt push to hard as i dont want to go backwards more than i have gone forwards .as that has happened before i went 2 steps forward & about 10 steps back..

G'day Jason,
Sounds like the real estate guy is a good one (I knew there would be a good one somewhere )
Hope cody is ok. Don't jump to conclusions though. It might be something as simple as "not eating well" or "not playing enough AFL' (sorry 'nother mexican joke).
As I said before, I enjoying reading your thread - don't really know why, but you and Fatty need to know we are "listening". Even if we don't know the solution(s) either.
Good to see you getting out and about - even if it is only a little trip.
Sounds to me like it is 10 steps forward and 2 back.
Baby steps mate - you will learn to find a place in your mind where things are balanced. Good vs Bad, Up vs. Down, Happy vs. Sad. Land Rover vs. Crapota (OK, drop that last one!!!)
Avagoodweekend.
Cheers

Hi everyone its been a while since i last posted & i have to say again a big thankyou to everyone of you for your surport towards us it is a great help to us both even for me as jason now has some where & someone else to chat with..
I am actualy going out for a lunchon on wednesday with a lady from the school, her kids are in cody's classes & i know her from primary school aswell so i'm realy looking forward to it as i havent been asked to come along for years..
With every body talking to jason it is making a differance he tries to make an effort to go out now even though they are baby steps & its going to be a long process you are all making headway with him, he is still embarassed at times & worried what to say to people he feels he should be trying more to go out but i keep telling him to not worry & just do what he can not over do it or he will end up going down hill & that hill will be so hard to get back up, & i am enjoying a little bit of freedom from the worrying of him because he will sit on the computer & chat with you & i can go out without the worry of him being at home alone & panicing..It is a great relief to have all be it very little it does help me & i'm so grateful to you all ..
Please bare with him as he is now learning to have conversations with people & comunicate. We only ever got to talk to older people when he was younger as we had to go everwhere his parents went ,not with people our own age & now we have a wide range of ages to talk with...
He gets quite excited when someone posts or talks to him here & i havent seen that in him since for i cant remember when..
He has at times asked me what should i say to everyone ,its like he said before its a learning curve for him & he loves this site & he has been trying to interact in other posts & threads..he's trying hard it's hard as he has never opened up so much before we have kept this to ourselves for so long it just got easy .....
He is learning everyones names & their personalities for the first time in a long while,& he is relaxed more & i am very pleased to hear that you all enjoy reading this thread & happy to chat to jason & me.... karen

Karen, I thought when I invited Jason, to go with me up to Maitland it might have been a big ask, but then again I invited him because he would have been in a Landy (even though he reckons there not proper ones) and we could have discussed Landies. However, I expected him to say no, but that is good he is making some progress. Even though I have also been through the mill in my life, getting out and about doesn't worry me, but everybody is different. I still have flashbacks though. Any way my thoughts are with you and Jason. Cheers:D:D:D

Also the guy from singleton we dont know how to say his name (sorry), asked him us if we wanted to go to camping at lake st clair you should of seen him then nearly in cold sweats ..that in itself is a huge step for him & i know when he read it he paniced & didnt know what to say or do..but he told the truth..& i know in myself he will be able to do things in time..

You know what Fatty and Jason, like ausfree, I never expected you guys to say yes. And it certainly doesn't offend me if you say no. Maybe one day.:)
Dinga doesn't want to come either - she values her hearing too much.:o:):p
Sometimes Jason, you can just imagine going somewhere (what do those hippies call it?) "transcendental meditation". My daughter and I used to do it. Close you eyes and imagine - you can "travel" anywhere!....if it gets a bit scary all you have to do is open your eyes.
(Kinda the opposite to 4wding, cause then I close my eyes when it gets scary!:lol2:)

Good to hear the real estate guy is going to do the right thing - especially after 15 years with him. I'm sure something will work out for the best soon. But isn't that why we all drive Landies? ;)
Know you've been busy and are taking things one day at a time (which is the best thing for all of us to do) but have you done any more on the tyre carrier for Christine yet? Gee I wish I had the mechanical skills you obviously have listening to you talking with Ausfree.

No, didn't change the filters, he seemed to think it wasn't necessary, but he reckons one of the clutches is worn because the fluid had a slight burnt smell to it. Oh, sorry you can't make it, would've been a good time to have a chat. Maybe next time!!!:D:D
Hey AUS you can buy clutch packs for auto boxes there not to expensive its more the labour for taking the box out & pulling down to put the new ones in.& if you get all the mesurements of your clutch pack you can look around & more than likely you could get a heavy duty pack..shame its not a turbo box i have a brand new heavy duty clutch pack & a manual shift valve body in the shed some where..i'll find it when we have to clean out for the move..plus if it was a turbo box i could do it for you...& it wouldnt cost you a thing as i already have everything..
PS if it had water in it wouldnt it make sence to change the filters, from what i can remember with mine i couldnt get the water out as the filter are so fine..if he had changed the filters & realy flushed it it would be ok you just have to make sure all traces of water (coolant) is out..i never had trouble with mine after doing that...
i dont mean to sound abrupt or sarcastic i just think the filters should of been changed....& i cant stand machanics taking advantage of people..
I use to do the services on old toms car & his daughters as the machanic was charging then $80 just to change the oil...
& i would of just changed the radiator over in your car since it was split i recon there mite be a chance it mite go again unless they replace the whole bottom tank.....BUT I COULD BE WRONG & HAPPY TO BE PROVED WRONG.....

Well its a very crapy low day today i got some bad news on the weekend .remember old tom i told use about, well karen called in to see his wife for me to see how she was traveling, & it turns out its just got worse for her.there daughter was just diagonsed with ovarian canser & it was only found because she had a cold.well after going through all the stuff at the hospital when she had the opperation the doc walked out looked at them all in the waiting room then loked all around the room found a tissue box went & pick it up went over to the family & said we took out a tumor the size of this tissue box...then to top it off the keemo she is on is the lowest posable ,they tried her on the strongest & the medium & she went into anapharlaktic shock with both of them..if she was on the strong one she would have a 70% chance a beating it & about 50% on the medium one ,..they have given her a 20% chance on this one she on ,she calls it the home brand..shes in good spirits.
I found out when old tom use to call in he would allways say to me just calling in to make sure your not dead he would call in every week just to check up on me for that reason...I found out he was realy worried about my depression cause i was fighting it bad at the time before he died...
now his wife on top of all her troubles is worried about why i havent been out in the shed working at all as she goes past regularly..
& was asking karen how i was as she knows i was close to tom so karen told her that i had taken his death hard but stop worring about him he has me & now he has made some friends to talk with.& is finaly relaxing a bit & chating to people..but i think she will allways worrie cause its her nature she is such a loverly lady & i feel so bad for them at the moment...
So thats about it for today i am so sick of this depresion part of my problem i get so down & i wont take any drugs for this part as they are all so addictive i dont want that on top of it...
Ah well i will have the pamphets to do at lunch time ,mite take my mind off a few thing i hope.. [bigsad] i feel like this :toilet:..

Yeah, doubt if that "turbo" clutch plate would fit, Banjo, the motor is a rover V6 mounted sideways and attached to a "Jatco" 5 speed auto tranny. Apparently the tranny is Japanese, built by Nissan as it is on a few of the Japanese cars. Being a newby to Landrovers and with them using terms like "Tiptronic Change" I thought it was a BMW box. But I have been proven wrong, I have spoken to a few mechanics and they all say it WILL fail after water entered the tranny. Even the fluid they use is a special synthetic type ( I have the oil type written down here somewhere).
When I took the car to Bob Hunt last week he gave it a full flush, and he has just refilled it with the same fluid they use in Fords, he couldn't see the sense of spending all that money on the right fluid when it is just a waste.
The tranny fluid does not go into the radiator but into a cooler that is mounted behind the radiator, and cooled by radiator coolant. Bob has recommended that should I decide to replace the tranny to put a cooler in from the diesel model which is air cooled, so I won't have the same problem again.
Thank you for your offer, but as I said I don't think the clutch pack you have is the right one. Cheers Mate:D:D
Always open to suggestions from an old 'Rover Professional" such as yourself though!!!!:):)

Hey you could allways just let your wife drive it all the time & when it breakes again say aaaahhhhhhh you broke my rover she mite let you get what you want & just get a little car for her to pickup her parents in...tell her it would be more comfortable & easier to get into for them....LOL..:wasntme:

Have'nt written the Freelander off yet, both my wife and myself like it so a final descision will be made when Bob Hunt gets a price on a relacement tranny. No rush the car is going fine at the moment. Apparently you can get new ones from China??? of all places. The cost will not be less than $3000.:eek: So we have to weigh that up against trading the car after owning it for 6 months and taking a loss of maybe $5000 to $6000:(:( So you can see we are in a corner. As I have said before the car bodywise is in mint condition.:):)

Deano Yeah, there was a story on TV about a month ago about this mob in Sydney, apparently they are pretty quick to issue $88 fines if you are a minute over time, my wife said there was a bloke paying pretty close attention to the tickets in windscreens of cars parked there. They make there money out of issuing "fines" which I believe have no legal standing. Apparently they can get you for breaking a "contract" that you make when you enter their carpark. Same exercise down here. But it's still all bull****. Remember, they have to take YOU to court and prove that YOU have entered into a contract which YOU have renegged on. These people work on the average persons ignorance of the legal system and their fear of going to court. Scumbags basically. What did Daryl say in "The Castle" ...........tell 'em to get *******. Hey aus you own a new landrover so you rarely need to get parts ,,All mine have been series there for i need parts regularly karen use to visit every week building this one sometime twice a week for 3 years,, ching ching..
Karen said a lot of the workers down at the new woolies park there thats why you now have to pay..
Karen use to work at the french hot bread shop opposit aldi on the other side of woolies she still does when the owner wants to go back home for visits (Viatnam) & they are having heaps of trouble down there with the workers..

You are being cruel, the car is running great at the moment, but descisions have to be made, because as I have already said the gearbox will not last!!!:(. Six months tops according to those who "know"!!;)

Hey Banjo, I know you think a Freelander is not a "real" Landy, but what do you think of my new spare wheel cover I bought on Fleabay, they are hard to get for FL1's and I have been looking for ages. Got this one from Western Australia of all places. I wanted a wheel cover with the "Landrover" logo on it, but I did'nt want any advertising for a product. I hit the jackpot because this one also had "Freelander" on it. Whaddya reckon!!!:D:D

I am a customer of the barber in Harrison St; and he tells me the same thing. I can't understand it, if the workers and business owners block up all the car parks, how are they going to get customers?

I don't know why they made the centre stop light like that, possibly something to do with the rear window being able to raise an lower, which is good because you can get a nice breeze through the car if you lower slightly the front left window and lower the rear window.I still think they could have intergrated the stop light above the window in the frame or something. Looks like that alien who "phones home" or something. the car by the way is not "new" it is a 2001 model.:D:DThe engine is a Rover V6, which is only 2.5 litres but develops 130KW of power. Goes OK but I would have thought if you are going to make a V6 at least make it a 3 litre, but thats the Poms for you.:):)

What was the last engine Rover designed that was any good......................................hmm. Too hard? One things the pomms, especially Rover, have never been any good at is designing engines. Always too small, too under powered, too complicated, too heavy etc. But brilliant body/coachwork. The Yanks on the other hand always made good engines but couldn't design a decent car to save their lives.

Deano You're right there mate, this engine is very complicated/computerised, the engine is brilliant when it is going and I love that Rover V6 exhaust note, it is unique. However, I have found the motor is very touchy, with a record of slipped cylinder liners etc, you would think in this day and age these sort of problems would be a thing of the past it is nearly as bad as the K1.8 litre four cylinder version, which I believe is a real headache. :o:)
