G'Day All,
As I'm a believer in monitoring what's going on with engine, transmission, etc I've installed additional gauges into Peril (2004 Defender 110 with Tombie2 re-map).
I monitor engine oil temperature, engine oil pressure, T/C oil temperature, coolant temperature and EGT. I've also fitted an Engine Saver.
Engine Oil Temperature. The engine oil temperature usually stays anywhere between 65 degrees and 75 degrees for most driving situations including towing a camper/trailer on freeways. However, extended hard low range climbs in the Victorian Alps last week in Low1 and Low2 saw the engine oil temperature climb to 96 degrees. (NB: EGT's remained below 400 degrees.) On one occasion I caught a whiff of hot oil smell. [The engine oil is Penrite HPR Diesel 5]
Transfer Case Oil Temperature. The transfer case oil temperature usually stays anywhere between 50 degrees and 70 degrees for most driving situations including extended hard low range climbs. However, towing a camper/trailer at 100 kph in 30 - 35 degree heat along the Hume last week for a few hundred kilometres saw the T/C oil temperature climb to 110 degrees. (NB: EGT's mostly ran in the mid 400's and I never exceed an EGT of 650 degrees.) [There is always a drip of oil on the underside of the transfer case from a small weep from a shaft seal. This leaves an oil stain wherever parked. The oil in the transfer case is a Penrite synthetic gear oil, possibly 75W-90.]
Engine oil pressure seemed fine in both situtatons as was coolant temperature. The Engine Saver did not alarm.
Can anyone tell me if these oil temperatures are normal or if one/both indicate a problem?
