installing air vents

hi all
I have just purchaced air vents off a seris 3 & i am going to install them to my 84 county. I have already taken out all of the dash & had the wiring removed & tidied up.
I know that other LR owners have done this because i met one near lake eyer around sept last year. (this is where i decided that i would do the same)
If anyone has any tips for the job please let me know??

It's fairly straight forward job. I've done 2 conversions now. Just a bit time consuming.

Easier if your firewall is the "plate spot welded" over the opening rather than the pressed metal type. Simply a matter of drilling out the spot welds and removing the plate. If it's the other type then you'll need to cut the section out of the firewall.

Everything from the series 3 should just bolt straight in as far as I can remember.

The only other thing would be the hinge part that attaches to the firewall....I got a couple off the flap section of an early series 2 (they're attached by screws) and cut them down and pop riveted them onto the firewall.

If you're in Melbourne I also have a couple spare grey plastic (louvre) Defender dash sections here if you want to finish it off with one. Swap for a few beers.;):cool:

If your using series 3 vent control levers have a look at the 2 (per flap) brackets that bolt inside the flap,the hole(s)that the control lever bolt to can be redrilled about 10mm along brackets and the ends with the old hole cut off,try and compare yours to a defender,you should see the difference,unless yours have been modified already. Jim

thanks for the post mick im in perth so i'll have to pass on the spares. The fire wall section will have to be cut out. Have you cut these out before??? can i just use tin snips to cut them out?? going to pick up the flaps on fri cant wait to put them in as its bloody hot at the moment.

Tin snips wont do it....you'll need to use a small die grinder with a cutting disk or a small angle grinder with cutting disk.

I scribed a line where I wanted to cut and then drilled holes in the four corners and cut with grinder. Cleaned it up after cutting with a file. Make sure you seal the edge after you've cut it. I tried to cut on the outside of the spot welds to try and keep the whole thing together as much as possible.
