Hello all.
Im now the proud owner of my first Landrover. 2003 Defender 90 that was for sale in QLD. It was in the Marketplace here last week.
It is currently on the truck over to Perth. It has been a bit of a pain buying interstate but hopefully it will be all worth it.
Once it arrives i will need to take it over the pits in order to get it registered in WA. It seems overkill as the seller had to pay for a roadworthy/safety Cert in QLD before he could put the car up for sale, and now 2 weeks later i will have to pay to have a similar inspection done!!
Has anyone taken a car over the pits in WA recently? One thing i read on another post( i think it was some silva or nissan site) was that if the car is fitted with an aftermarket exhaust you may need to get an emissions test done before they will pass you....
The 90 has got a Taipan XP exhast fitted so do you think i could be stuffed? Would the inspector have any idea that it was an aftermarket exhaust? its not like you can stick your head in it like some sports cars!
Any thoughts/tips?
Thanks

The pits inspection will check:

Vehicle ID (numbers)
IMMOBILISER - must have one fitted - nobody told me!!!
Lights
Horn
Wipers
Seat belts

They will then put the vehicle over the "pit" and check:

Tyres
Brakes
Steering
Suspension
Leaks
Chassis/Body (damage/rust)

They will then jack up one wheel and check wheel bearings/swivel bearings

Then they will take it for a road test with you in the passenger seat.
(I may have missed something...)

EDIT - I don't think they will worry about the exhaust unless it is obviously too loud. On my 110 they made me get a downward facing tip fitted to the end of my FACTORY exhaust. It exited at the rear corner, they deemed it a "side facing" exhaust, and stated all side facing exhausts need to exit downwards.

Thanks for that. I shouldn't need to do anything to it then before taking it over
the pits. Now it's just the waiting game, they have said 15 working days! Hopefully it might be a bit quicker than that!!

When I pitted my Defender and they did everything Isuzu described above and it was all going great until they looked at the seatbelts. The nicks in the belt that occur when the belt gets caught in the door are an instant fail. Check those.

They actually told me my car was in great nick ( you should have seen it before I wrote it off, I thought bitterly) and said go get new belts and race back and they'll just eyeball it and sign off. They thought my "anything else is cr_p" sticker was hilarious.

On the day you are booked in (do you book? I can't remember) get there at 630am with the newspaper and wait - the queues get horrendous very quickly.

When I changed my rego over they didn't drive it,they just done the inspection.I had alot of trouble as numbers didn't match up and it had been registered as a petrol not diesel so I had to get two inspections done even though defenders aren't sold as petrols and each time was $67. Pat

It had done 78k kms and some extras fitted. Buy the time it gets to my door it will cost me about $28000.
I had been looking for one for about 6 months and not many decent ones come around.
Im located just south of perth, can't wait to get it dirty as it will be my first 4wd.:)

No, not really. A friend that is also on the forum (Search for Werner) bought his 05 Defender in SA and also had to take it over the pits. Find him on the member list and PM him to see if there is anything that gave him trouble.

Hope you get your 90 soon and looking forward to see you out on the next trip.

Cheers,

Jurgens

It depends who you get on the day. Some guys are picky and want to make your life hell, but most are just fine. If you are polite and helpful you'll get further than being belligerent.

If the car looks in good nick and well cared for it'll probably only get a cursory going over, and as long as the engine/chassis number match up you'll be on your way.

Hope it goes smoothly.
David

BTW - I wouldn't worry about the exhaust at all unless it is obviously loud. My 90 doesn't even have a central/main muffler and it's quiet as a baby :)

:)

Thanks guys, One more thing... The seller couldn't find the paper receipt from his rego. I have a signed contract of sale/purchase that has all the vehicle details on it. Is that what they will check the engine/VIN numbers with. From what i have read that is all i need as proof of ownership.

They will dial up the QLD rego database and check that the numbers match.

You better be sure they do, cause there will be headaches if they don't :(

One more thing - did you do a "REVS" check before you paid for it to make sure it was not under finance? If you bought it from a dealer, ignore this, as you always get clear title when buying from a dealer.

* "REVS" might not be the right name of the system in QLD, but they will have something similar to check if the vehicle is under finance/stat writeoff/etc. Costs about $15 for a certificate in NSW and guarantees clear title if done on the day of purchase.

Yes - REVS is the name in QLD. I thought it just guaranteed the car could not be repossessed if done on day of purchase???

You must have a very stressful job then. Can't imagine it's pleasant to knock on someones door and tell them you are taking away their recently purchased pride and joy.....

Do you get a lot of flak?

I used to , now it is in one ear and out the other . It is only a small portion of my business , like serving summons , water off a ducks back really .
Most are young bogans with HSV's jet ski's and huge homes .. lose their jobs and everything that has been tacked onto the mortgage goes with the house when you lock it up . It's a hard lesson for them , but its not me that signs the loan papers .
I am from Islander decent , so big built and a team of Maori tow truck drivers waiting help lol

You just need the rego number and VIN AFAIK???

Best to do it anyway, it is onlt $14ish - if unencumbered all is well - if it has $$$ owing then get a lawyer!!!!

i read on the WA DPI website you need to own your car for more than twelve months. was this a drama when getting the car inspected/regoed

minerma. . .all this means is if you have owned the (registered) car for 12 months or more interstate, then it will not need to be inspected to transfer it to WA registration - you just need to do the paperwork and pay the fees (including stamp duty?) at the Department of Transport.

If you've owned the car for less than 12 months, or are a WA resident buying a car from interstate, then you will need an inspection.

In my experience with four different cars (a '69 Citroen DS, a '62 Thunderbird, a '93 Suzuki Cappuccino and a '89 Nissan Pao. . .sadly no Defenders. . .) the pit inspections are quite reasonable - provided your car isn't a complete piece of junk and it's clean and well presented then all is generally OK. I tend to think it's got as much to do with your attitude as it has with your car. . .if you're unpleasant and argumentative, then you're out the door. . .

Hope this helps. . .

x 2. There are also plenty of inspectors apart from going to the DoT sites - look on the DoT site for a list. I had no problems with my 04 D2a last month - apart from the $90 fee
