Has anyone had experience in bringing in large s/h parts from England.
Items such as trailers and body panels.
How is it done and is it expensive?
Thanking you all in anticipation.

Expensive yes but not that difficult, cheapest would be a full container load shared with others. All used parts will need to be spotlessly clean or you will be up for exxy AQIS fees for steam cleaning and or fumigation. Ideally you would have someone at origin arrange for the items to be delivered to a freight consolidation depot to be packed or if its a full container load and all parts at same location, the shipping line will/can deliver the container at a specified address for loading. Inland transport costs in the UK are expensive and usually cost more than the seafreight portion.

Thankyou Nick for your reply. It was very informative as a broad brush stroke.

In order to give this thread a little more life, I would like to ask if anybody has any more information a little more specific. Has anyone reading this thread done this before? Who knows, we may be able to organise an AULRO container.

Where do you get the containers from?
Are there any people willing to share a container?

Where/how do you get them cleaned? Are there businesses in Uk that do this? Any recommendations?

Assuming the items can be delivered to a point in the UK, where do the items get delivered to and who does the packing? Are there businesses that do this? Any recommendations? Does anyone know someone who can?

This info is very much appreciated.
regards
Mick

Containers come from the shipping lines either direct or via a freight forwarder, parts will need to be cleaned by the seller if not clean already.
If the parts have been sitting around and likely to have spiderwebs or other insect infestations then fumigation will be required - also if wood is included for packing or items themselves. The depot will depend on the company you use, most likely points are near ports such as Southhampton in the south and Tilbury east of London. New / clean items are easy but 2nd hand car parts are more complicated and will usually require mandatory AQIS inspections once here.

Not being a spoil sport but I wouldn't keep talking about this type of thing openly here on the forum. The only reason i say this is I get most of my bike stuff from the states and I'm coming across more and more businesses not dealing with us as we're irritating the importers and since the importers buy more, we lose out. So far so good for landy stuff but you never know,
Cheers

cinders,

I appreciate you view, however, it does not apply in this case.
I wish to import stuff bought from individuals in UK not "businesses" in UK. The "businesses" in Australia and UK do not offer these items for sale or carry them in stock. If the "importers" in Australia get upset with me, it's their own fault as they do not offer these goods or services.
I have already tried many parts dealers in Victoria and they often have vacant looks on their faces as they say to me "If it isn't in stock, we can't get it."
Perhaps, cinders, you can help.

This may be an opportunity for an enterprising soul to start a business of importing goods bought from individuals overseas by individuals in Australia. ebay may help as it would complement their business Are you up for it?

Before you go to the UK for parts try New Zealand. I bought an engine for my Isuzu cvr from there and saved around $4500, even after the import duties and AQIS fees. It's also very surprising the parts you will find there. There were absolutely no CVR engines in Aus but in NZ they were as common as warts in a brothel. One more thing, avoid Mainfreight as they are experts at ripping people off and if possible find your own customs clearance person, the transport companies will charge you roughly double what a private operator will. Good luck.
