View Full Version : Ticking noise

Long shot, but anyone experienced a "ticking" at anything over 85kph?
ONLY happens at this speed and above.
It sounds exactly like a stone in the tyre tread, but it's not, Ive checked thoroughly.
Have had a quick look underneath, but can't see much wrong/out of place.
Hoping for a better look this weekend, just wondering if anyone has any experience of this before I start?
It's defo a "speed" thing, and not a "rev" thing. Can hold it on higher revs at standing and no ticking. Can hear it more as other vehicles overtake (not difficult!) but sounds like it may be nearer the front than the rear, but can't be sure. Can't hear in the car, only with window down.
Cheers for any input in advance...

The ticking I have sounds alot like that, ive been able to identify it as it has got worse, mine is an exhaust leak between the manifold and pipe flange (gasket).
I went to an exhaust place at first and they could not hear the leak, I could when I drove past walls on the high way. Went back and they now have identified it.
Hope this helps
ps, thought it was a tappet noise at first

Hey Kieren
Has it always been there? Or has it appeared since you had the pulley go? Just wondering if something, some part may be different...
Cheers

No bud, it was there before the pulley failure.
Was kinda hoping it might have been causing the ticking, but no such joy!
As Baffle indicated, I have a sneaky suspicion it has something to do with the exhaust, but I do know it's had those particular gaskets replaced on both sides very recently.
Funny thing is, I first noticed it a while back (after the last AULRO Powerlines trip I went on). Then a couple of weeks ago went out and did some sand driving, and on the way home noticed the ticking had disappeared. "Bonus" I thought! But about a week later it returned. Thought I'd just put up with it, but now it's starting to get on my t!ts, so I'd like to try and sort it.
Cheers,

Thanks BigJon,
Again, a new front prop was put on about 15 months ago, so I would seriously hope its not that!!

Would still be worth checking.
Exhaust leaks are load dependant. If it is an exhaust leak it will be there under acceleration, but dissappear on over run.
It sounds like something that is rotational and road speed dependant. You mentioned it is coming from the front of the vehicle. Propshaft.... It is a known common failure point. Was the replacement fitted with grease nipples?

My thought is that it must be something after the diff, as at 2000RPM there would be 33 ticks per second, ie not a tick at all but a buzz, as unless something was very weird it would do 1 tick a revolution.
Still at 1/3.54 it would be 11 per second and only maybe something at the tyre would be audible as separate ticks.
Disco 2s have UJs instead of CV joints. I would be looking at the boots and at the UJs themselves.

Its actually difficult to say where its coming from, just sounds louder nearer front when cars go by, but maybe thats just coz the drivers window is open. Like I say, can hear nothing at anything less than 90kph, so can't replicate it unless moving.
I believe the new prop was an OE part, done under warranty by a local independent LR mech shop. What should I be looking for there in terms of inspection? Do not have the ability/tools to remove from vehicle.

Nail in tread that exposes at speed?
Swap tyres for spare, one by one... If it goes... :D

There are grease nipples there, and looks exactly like the one in the RAVE diagrams.
But I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess they're not the same ones you guys are talking about...?? :(
How would I know if the props need attention? Looks like my mech has done some greasing on both of the props at the last recent service :D. But it was ticking before then too.
I did notice though that the drivers bumpstop (?... square rubber with metal plate and single bolt) has considerably more play in it than the passenger side. So I "persuaded" it a little, took it for a short run, tried to get up to speed, and the ticking seemed less noticeable....probably more coincidence than anything! But I might try "persuading" it a little more tomorrow and see if it makes a difference. I hope so!!
Cheers for all the info and suggestions (again!) so far guys. Appreciate it.
