I asked this Question on the Disco3 site but I suppose its more Oz related.

I was wondering if one of the Lurking Land Rover Techs knows if the TMC is just simply disabled on the Oz spec Nav or if its a module that needs adding.

We do have a TMC system in Oz provided by Suna my guess is there must be some licensing that manufactures have to pay to be able to say their Nav systems work with Suna.

SUNA (http://www.sunatraffic.com.au/)

Can the TMC be enabled on the D4 Nav system?

Don't know about the D4, but on the D3 there was a TMC module that was omitted. IF you obtained one, it should be easy to plug in, but you'd need to have it activated.

Sorry to be a while answering, but i only get so much lurking time ;)

The D4 has exactly the same CCF as the D3 and as such anything that can be enabled on the D3, such as TMC can be done on the D4 too.

How do I get the TMC enabled?

You can get a dealer to activate it or you can buy a faultmate from Colin (BBS Guy) and activate it yourself.

First, though, you will need to find out if you need the module or if there's one already installed.

(Just incase you don't know, the CCF Colin refers to is the Car Configuration File on the main ECU)

Ok after digging around and asking some questions.

It comes down to the simple fact that Land Rover don't have a licensing agreement with Suna Traffic Control.

"Suna GPS Traffic Updates are provided via a subscription based service as an encrypted transmission, and as such the receiving devices need to be capable of decoding the information.

Devices capable of decoding this transmission are available from those companies with which we have a commercial agreement (please check here for specific device information - SUNA - GPS Traffic Updates (http://www.sunatraffic.com.au/moreinfo.html)).

Unfortunately at this time we do not have a commercial agreement with Land Rover. For further information regarding Land Rover’s plans, I would encourage you to continue checking with the manufacturer themselves for service availability information."

Don't be sorry... Time with family is always a priority.

I have now written to LR Australia asking them when they will make arrangements with Suna Traffic Channel.

I think if more owners make noise about it then we might see some action.

A response from Land Rover on TMC.

Just note as you read this the RDS-TMC was developed to a standard. What I believe this comes down to is Land Rover Australia not wanting to spend money on licensing. Overseas its actually the customer who pays for the service.

Thank you for your email regarding TMC systems in Land Rover Satellite Navigation.

Please accept our sincere apologies as this system is not compatible with Land Rover Satellite Navigation systems. Unfortunately there are currently no plans for the further incorporation of this system into Land Rover Satellite Navigation.

Should you require further assistance with the features and functionality of your Sat Nav system we would recommend you discuss your requirements with the highly trained personnel at your local authorised Land Rover dealer. The will be in the best position to advise you should any further updates become available.

We hope this clarifies the situation and thank you for bring this matter to our attention. We trust you will enjoy many happy and safe years of motoring.

Should you have any further inquiries please contact me on the number below. Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30 (EST).

Kind regards

Opening up a potential can of worms here, but has there been any further progress on this topic from LRA?

I find it extraordinary that a $25K Hyundai i30 has this built into it's Navigation system and ~$100K Discovery 4 HSE does not

I'll re-post here what I posted in the other thread...

That's going to be a challenge...

Intelematics Australia broadcasts a national encrypted RDS-TMC service focused initially on urban Australia under the brand 'SUNA Traffic Channel'. The service reaches around 85% of urban Australia, using commercial FM broadcasters in seven cities, as well as via XML for online and smartphone applications. The service is available on GPS navigation systems including Navma, Mio, Uniden, iPhone (Navigon & Sygic), Eclipse, Pioneer, Alpine and Clarion. SUNA Traffic Channel is also available in Ford, Holden, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Mercedes Benz navigation systems.

SUNA is currently the only source of comprehensive, metropolitan congestion monitoring content in Australia ? proprietary technology interfaces to traffic light control systems. The SUNA broadcast service is fully compliant with both RDS and TMC. However, since the broadcast is encrypted it does not work on in-car GPS navigation systems that do not have a commercial arrangement with SUNA.

More info herehttp://www.sunatraffic.com.au/where-to-purchase-suna/

The RDS-TMS hardware from Land Rover is not able to decrypt the broadcast information from Suna. They do not have an "open" broadcast like in Europe.

On the Euro-spec Land Rovers there is an additional antenna amplifier which is mounted on the tailgate glass, and runs back to the radio head unit via a coax cable. This is missing from the Australian delivered cars. But it wouldn't matter since the decryption function is missing from the head unit anyhow...
