Defender 2002 TD5 County - dead fuel pump.

On the way home yesterday the engine began to miss and shortly
afterwards stopped. I notice that there was no familiar tank
fuel pump noise.

Can I safely assume that the pump is dead and needs replacement or
is there a fuse which could have gone. If so which one and where is it
in the box? Safety inertial switch seems OK have done a reset.

If the pump needs to be replaced is the easiest way to cut a 20cm
square hole in the flow over the pump best?

I would be most grateful for tips.

Hi Nick,

recreational vehicle conversions - exploz pty.ltd. - australia (http://www.exploz.com.au) have a kit to allow acccess to the fuel pump in 110 Td5 models, they have it listed on their webpage, and they advertise here on AULRO. It consists of a plate and stiffeners and has instalation instructions. Oh, and yes it is most likely a fuel pump problem, if your vehicle has travelled over 60,000miles (100,000km) then isn't unexpected.

Yup sounds knackered but I prolonged mine for awhile longer by belting the hell out of the tank till my pump arrived:twisted: I just cut the hole in the floor to get access, much cheaper. But that's too release the fuel lines, you still have to drop the tank to get new pump in. Bloody Landrover in the infinite wisdom decided to put a rail right over the pump hence having to drop the tank.

In a 110, UNLESS you intend using the load space for gravel or other heavy loads, then cutting the crossbrace isn't an issue:)

My '04 Fender did the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago...It turned out to be a loose connection to the relay under the driver's seat had been overheating, and had finaly disconnected.
Also of note, the relays were in a different order to what the manual said.
Have a look in the box under the driver's seat, pull all the relays out, and check the sockets for heat discolouration.
All I did was pull the socket apart and crimp the spade terminals a little with some pliers, then swapped the fuel pump relay with one from somewhere else.
The Fuel pump fuse is under there too.
