Hi all, I'm fairly new to P38's, I noticed in the owners handbook (RR P38 2001 4.6 HSE) it suggests using standard unleaded fuel, but when you open the fuel filler flap on the vehicle there is a sticker saying premium unleaded fuel recommened.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
What fuel do you use?
Cheers, Pete.

Regular unleaded should be fine with a low compression engine.
Check the compression ratio of your engine (it's stamped near the engine number) - if it's 8.13:1, then it's a low compression engine.

Late D2s went to a high compression engine but I don't think the RRs did.

I should get a premium fuel stricker for mine now that it's HC.

Thanks Scouse, I had a look and mine is stamped CR 9:35:1
does that mean high compression?

Hi Peter

Where do you find the engine No, I looked all over and I can't find it. Mines a late 2002 so it may be a High Comp. I don't know, but I use straight unleaded and over 5000klms I got an average of 16.3 Ltrs per 100.

Hi Coasting, yes it took me a bit of searching to find the engine number too, easy way to find it is to follow the oil dipstick tube down to where it meets the motor...hey presto! There it is.
When I found mine I had that moment where you slap yourself on the forehead :)

Thanks for the replies fellas, as always I learn A LOT from your knowledge.
I was running it on premium anyway, getting a lot better mileage compared to my '89 3.5 efi Ranige.
I have not taken it on any long runs yet, will be interested to see how far I get out of a tank on the highway.
Cheers, Pete.

Regarding types of Fuel I have done some experiments using Higher octane fuel and found the following.

My Fuel Consumption when using 95 was 18L/100k this was city driving to work and back every day, round trip of 80Kms. Soon as I switched too 98 it went down too 16.1 and has stayed there, been 3 weeks now.

Country driving - I went too Meetung, approx 600kms roundtrip and returned yesterday, my Fuel Consumption hovered between 11.9 and 12.1L. This is slightly better than using 95 Octane. (same trip last year carrying same payload was around 12.4)

What I have found is the engine idles so much better, sitting at the lights the only indication its still running is by looking at the Tacho, very smooth indeed. It also appears too have slightly more power between 40km and 80km perhour. Not much difference over 90km/h.

So I guess my 99 '4.0 getting an indicated 19.5L/100Km on 33" tyres and 4.1 diffs, and mostly in Sports mode around town, is not what you blokes would call economical?

To be fair, the economy (misnomer! let's call it consumption) is more like 19.5L/115Km (16.9L/100Km) due to speedo error.

Maybe I'll try the premium stuff for the next few tanks and see what happens. Maybe one day I'll even try to change my driving style :p or not!
