I want to get an iPod classic. I think.
Not sure how many songs will fit on a Nano, whether it will eb enough for a whole large CD collection.

Anyway the guy at the shop told me that Apple set the prices and the prices are more or less the same everywhere.

Given the sum of money involved, and the fact I DO want a genuine Apple iPod, has anyone got any suggestions regarding best place to purchase from ?

Vlad, I hate to say it, but I'd only buy from an apple approved outlet, we have an 80Gb one which holds my whole collection, but it has been replaced twice under warrantee, and I look after my electronic gear.
For the money involved, I wouldn't go second-hand, as you could end up with an expensive model boat anchor.

I bought a 2nd gen Nano a few years ago and was told the same thing. Everywhere I looked they were within about $1 of each other.
I have seen them cheaper when running out an old model though.

Do you really need to fit your whole collection on at once? That is what itunes is for.

Bought a eBay second hand 40 gig ipod dropped it once cost me $90 to repair, music collection greater than its capacity so l retired it to the bedside speaker unit and got a 80 gig iPod it too is now to small to hold entire music collection which is now about 167 gig, so l just change my playlists every three months to rotate the collection on the 40 gig and 80 gig iPods, thinking of buying a bigger iPod but they are only 160 gig so wait a couple year for 350 gig beastie l reckon.

My advice is buy the biggest memory you can afford l think the 80 gig was like $330 from JB Hi Fi or Dick Smith in 2007

Just been through this saga myself. Definitely need to get the biggest capacity you can afford so you can avoid the upgrade as long as possible and of course it depends on how hard you are compressing your MP3s.

New can be had for about $290 + P/H online... that's about the best anywhere I have found. JB have them at present for $318.

Sadly the iPod is the best option unless you can handle 120G via the Zune or want spend up on the larger capacity units... Archon 7 from memory as one example.

Happy shopping.

I have been told by a I-pod owner that a new I-pod is being released tomorow. that may drive down the prices of what you want to buy. So I would wait a day or two.

Apple has press conference around 2am aus time thursday morning. Prob tablet, maybe macbook pro overhaul, possibly Itouch.

Regarding pricing, yes Apple sets prices but the main issue is that he margins for the retailers are as small as 10% so thats why there is little movement.

Personally from a functionality point of view I'd go with an Itouch 32gb, but if its all about capacity the the classic is the way to go.

cheers

160 gb is supposed to hold 40,000 songs. That's a lot You might want to guestimate how many songs you actually have so you don't over-buy.

According to Apple 8gb is good for about 2000 songs.

I got mine from Dick Smith Electronics .... paid a little more than you would from JB HiFi ..... but you can get a 5 year replacement warranty for $70. The extra 1 year warranty from Apple is $90.

I have an 80 gb Classic (work supplied - Free :D). It currently has just over 13000 tracks on it and there is plenty of spare room.

Given that the average radio station has (from memory) a playlist of about 800 tracks.... I get lots of variety!

Yeah a mate here at work has the 120G classic and has about 20G free with 17000+ songs on it. Impressive.

I'm leaning to the Zune now as the whole iTunes world really locks you in far too much (for me anyway). Much nicer to have some freedom with drag and drop etc. Also if you have to reinstall iTunes, ask someone about restoring their playlists etc if they have had PC issue(s)... not a fun deal. Of course they will sell you an app to sort it... :)

Also, if you buy a song (or other) from iTunes and it happens to be 'protected', you will have a hard time burning your perfectly legally bought track as a .wav etc... unless you buy that app as well. All round just too hard at times and inconvenient even after doing the 'right thing'.

For 90% of punters though, the iPod is great.

Cheers.

I have a 30GB Classic and I'm starting to run out of room at about at about 6000 tracks.

I think 30GB is ample - you can hold more on your PC and reconfig your Ipod when you get sick of some.

If you start putting video on there you will need heaps more space.

What are you on about? Itunes is Drag and Drop!
Playlists are just a backup (can be done as a txt file) so takes seconds.
No apps required to sort it out.
I think you've been led up the garden path a bit here...;)

If you buy ANY music from online ANYWHERE that has DRM then it is restricted. iTunes will allow you to burn most music to a CD...

Also, your "legally" owned track on ANY download site has conditions, often restricting use to digital format or limited devices etc....
This is from any legitimate, licensed, online music store. Not just iTunes...

Any body chasing an Ipod interface that plugs into the back of Discovery11 2000 to 2003 and some 2004 models stereo head units. I have one for sale. Cost $135 but my mistake your gain, $100 posted.
If you have the head unit with tape deck and has at the rear plugs that look like the bottom connector for Grundig here (http://www.tehnomagazin.com/Auto-radio-car-connector/GRUNDIG-Car-Radio-Wiring-Connector.htm) then this unit will fit. It charges the Ipod as well.
I purchased it from here (http://www.installer.com/item/display_item.php?it=LROV-MLINK1-V1)

PM me.

I'm looking at a classic not only for the music but also as a video source for the back seat portable DVDs that the girls have for trips. One device with lots of movies on it beats having to drag a box full of DVDs around anyday.
If you buy it online from Mr Apple you get to pay full price but you do get to have something laser etched on the case for "free".

Tote

Sorry, those criticisms don't really pan out.

Anyway, Zunes are great as they offer a good foil to protect your iphone from theft - just dress it up like a Zune and it will be as safe as houses! (http://hideapod.com/)

If my memory serves me right the classic has an actual hard drive the touch shuffle and Nano use flash memory.

the actual hard drives can be damaged by running or in the case of most users on here bumping around in the 4wd.

I have a 32gb Nano that serves me well with a car kit it entertains me on the long drives between Broken Hill and Sydney

If you go to the online store and look at special deals on the left hand side you can get refurbished ipods (among other things) at reduced prices. Come with same warranty as new, all manuals and original packaging. Bought an ipod mini a few years ago and still going strong.

I meant from the point of being able to plug your player into whatever poota you may be using (work, home etc) and do the thing. Unless you have iTunes installed, not going to be as simple as the more generic MP3 players (all others?) such as Samsung etc... I should have qualified by saying no d&d without iTunes which equals 'App Dependant' but I may still be corrected on this as everyone I know with an iPod uses iTunes. My reference is the fella from work who could not restore his iPod setup back into iTunes after having to reinstall iTunes due to a poota crash... he tried everything and a purchased app was the 'fix'. Possible this scenario has changed as this was quite a few months ago now.

Again incorrect, sorry! If you buy ANY music from online ANYWHERE that has DRM then it is restricted. iTunes will allow you to burn most music to a CD...

My point there is it's a pretty common bugbear with iTunes Store that you can download certain files (DRM) and iTunes simply won't let you burn it UNLESS you buy their app. All music is restricted by copyright. Allowing you to only burn 'most' of your paid for stuff isn't good enough Apple, it should be all. The main point is that yes they will let you do it BUT you must give them more money for the app. That stinks IMO. :(

Also, your "legally" owned track on ANY download site has conditions, often restricting use to digital format or limited devices etc....

Yes agreed, and again all music has restrictions. Point mainly was towards the fact that you have to purchase more apps 'if' you want to be flexible. Sure most people won't give a rip (pun intended:D), but for demented people like me with music studios, it can be a royal pain.

Overall, really I believe that iTunes can be great but in all honesty, I haven't yet met an iPod user who really finds it to be an excellent thing. I've spent time with it and personally think it is a royal pain as soon as you want some flexibility. MUCH prefer using the Samsung (and others) and do everything very simply away from that world of grief BUT that is only my opinion.

My personal purchase is going to be based on ease of use and capacity. There is no way that iTunes is the solution for ease of use (in overall terms) but again, my use isn't the generic downloader relying on iTunes to get everything into their MP3 player.

Cheers!

Haha! Doug's a funny guy, that's great... he must really hate the Zune... maybe he's Bill's cousin or something. :D

Not sure why my 'criticisms' don't pan out, it was first hand from the people I work with and were based on their experience, they didn't make it up but please refer earlier post as maybe this has changed since.

As for me. I don't give a rip which player people use coz it's all a bit Holden Vs Ford sometimes this stuff. All have good points :)

Cheers.

Thought I'd post a quick update to this thread. I ended up with the iPod 160G after looking at all options as it is the best bang for buck. If you want to keep your MP3 quality up as best as possible, you can go outside iTunes for your compression (Lame being one).

Ended up paying (new) $260 + P&P....hard to beat at the time.

The world of iTunes hasn't caused pain I have to say (no drama to date) and I don't d/l from it.

Overall, happy times so far.
Cheers.

That was off an eBay seller: eBay Feedback Profile for itglobalsale (http://feedback.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=itglobalsale&ftab=AllFeedback)

Mine is in his feedback there somewhere...

Genuine product ?

I heard some ebay sellers were selling genuine (though original) ipods from back when they were having battery issues....

Be careful if you are getting more than 10% off on a new product as that is the markup of most resellers.

When Dick Smith etc have their 10% off Apple sales they make the money on you buying the accessories at the same time... if you want to try your luck see if you can get then to order you a custom one (like a faster HD etc) and order some accessories with the custom computer.. they get a single invoice price from Apple and you will get 10% off the accessories as well (software, etc.. whatever you buy)...

Yeah fair points... mine's been good to date. It was actually still in Big W plastic shrink wrap so I was wondering if it was a little warm to be honest.

The seller had make a bid option so I made him one of those cheapo bids and he took it.
