My aircon has gone strange on a 4 door classic. It will work for a short while and then may work intermittently. I had the unit serviced 18 months ago and replaced some connections etc but it now has does not want to play. Any options or is a new compressor the most likely?

Who knows?
With a description like you have given it could be anything.
I suggest you take it to a aircon technician.
Maybe someone could help is you gave a better description.eg does the compressor cycle on and off , are there bubbles in the sight glass of the dryer, does it work if you bridge the low pressure switch, are the fans turning on?
By far the most likely thing is that it is low on gas and in that case you need a tech anyway.

My friend's classic had major problems, firstly the TX valve (right inside the dash) was replaced, then a hose blew, took weeks to get it sorted.
Then his fans ceased to work.
I got the job of tracing the fan wiring and it led to the fan speed resistor. This prize piece of Brit engineering lives inside the passenger side air intake vent, just behind the bonnet. It goes rusty and falls apart. We got another one from TRS and cut and spliced the wires where we could reach. Goes well now.

PhillipA , Bubbles in the sightglass ? would have to be the one remaining Ac still running R12 to worry about bubbles !!! R12 was banned 20 years ago !!!
That Low pressure switch is mork likely a HPL switch , which means it cuts out power to the compressor if either a low pressure or High pressure situation is reached .Being a 1985 job , its probably the worst case , the TX valve , but as the man said, could be 1000 reasons why it dont work , and from the symptons (complete lack of)given its just pure guesswork .
