Hi Guys
i Have searched and found mention but no reason of this issue i have.
At low speed or stopped, when i turn the steering wheel the steering groans quite loudly. Any reason for it doing this? anything can do to stop it?
there are no leaks from the steering box but it sounds like its coming from that area!
Thanks in advance
Steve

Possibly your pump on it's way out. Have a look for frothy bubbles in the fluid res after it's been driven.

Hmmm... dont want it to be that then do i? :)
I will check for froth but im pretty sure there isnt any....
What is it that goes in the pump? it actually feels like something rubber rubbing against something... i have similar on the disco td5 occasionally but i know thats a rubber donut type thing that gets dry....
Thanks

My Defender 300TDI also makes a groaning noise which comes from somewhere in the steering column. It's done so ever since I got it, some 5 years ago. Had it checked out by a very compentent LR mechanic and his diagnosis was "put up with it. It'll be expensive to fix and it's unlikely to be a problem". Well, five years and a lot of miles have gone by and it still grumbles, but it's not caused any other problems.

Mine does exactly the same thing. Dreading the repair since I have just moved and I am not sure on the local LR dealer yet....

My RRC was doing the same, and it turned out to be a loose belt. Would slip & groan when approaching full lock.
It was a funny noise, not what you'd expect a belt to make.
Worth a look, anyhow.

try a PAS flush,,, cheap,,, and simple,,, and a good chance to put new stuff in,,, and all so get a Winn's PAS flush kit thing,, it has a flush and a PAS treatment,, and put transmax Z oil in it, its by far the best, better then Dex3

make sure if you do the flush your self,, tern the steering each time you put a new res full of fluid in,, dont just suck it out and put new in,

Steve my ol disco did the same and it was caused by the pump but I chucked some stop leak in and it improved (which then points to the box)

See if all the connections are tight just incase its sucking air

My 130 groaned before the steering box was replacing under warranty and still groans now. I suspect the shaft but it's been like that for 10 yrs now. not worried. Don

I was told that this noise is normal on the defender, I was told its the hydraulic hoses that run along the front chassis member that resonate, could be BS who knows but ive done 20000km since buying the old girl and it seems OK????????;)
cheers
