25,000km and 10mths.... my 09 Puma has an oil leak spraying into the engine bay and onto the left underside of the bonnet.

I am assuming this is the brake vacuum pump oil seal???

It is booked in next week to be looked at under warranty but if it is the pump seal I am a bit disappointed, as I had thought these original early problems had been addressed by now. It had its 20,000km service only last month but of course the problem only occurs the day before the long weekend.

If it is the brake vacuum pump oil seal, I am also assuming that because the vehicle wasn't recalled then it is a non urgent problem and perfectly safe to drive around????

Is this right??

Cheers
Mark

Monitor your oil loss but my understanding is it has further to go. Mine started to weep and I managed to drive several hundred km's with no change. Your's is a lot worse.

The Vac pump is located at the top front passenger's side of the engine (where all the oil originates) and is bolted down on to a flat bracket. From memory it's the top pulley on that side too. From what I've read it actually only loses about 50mL of oil, but makes a BIG mess.

As for the pump itself the service bulletin refers to only changing if it goes or shows signs of going. From what I've read and speaker to others it seems to be more of a case of leave it and se if it fails as not all units do. I must admit I thought by 09 they were all on the latest iteration of the pump but obviously that's not the case.

This thread of mine on Defender2.net may give you some degree of comfort: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic1551.html?highlight=vacuum+pump
But I'd still get it to the dealer soon.

Had mine done this week (dealer in Osborne Park very good to me):D:D was ready in an hour. Mine has done 15000km and no leak at all, then oil everywhare. I am told they cannot replace the pump if it doesn't leak. My vehicle continues to get newer and I'm loving it:angel:

Mark those photo's could have been of mine a month ago. After describing it to Land Rover they said okay to drive it in to them (20km).
It was the vacuum pump and they were very prompt in replacing it under warranty.

They told me that the supplier gave Land Rover a faulty batch, and as Land rover had no record of which vehicles that batch went into they couldn't do a recall. And so are just waiting for the few hand grenades that are out there to go off, and then fix them.

Very happy with the repair and the way they handled it, but wish they had have cleaned up a bit better. If anything else develops a slow leak I would never know as it is all covered in oil still. As you say though. Good rustproofing.

Yep, my brake vacuum pump let go too around 12000k's. Very well handled by the dealer and fixed it under warranty without question and told me it was a common problem.

With the launch of the 90 once again in Oz , I researched Puma
Defs on Def.co.uk as a subsection from Disco3.co.uk.
Vacuum pump issues are the least of ones worries . The whole
fuel system gets a c rap review from owners . They're ( Ford ) still
manufacturing garbage , so I'll forget it and stay with the petrol D3.
Funny thing is , if you read Ford Transit forum , the reviews of the engine
and trans are in keeping with no-quality-control whatsoever !
Pity LR don't cut a deal with VW or Fiat for powertrains .......
