View Full Version : Broken Radiator Plug

everybody's "friend" Murphy has struck again. I was getting ready to return home from Adealaide back to Brisbane when as I was tightening the radiator plug to stop a weep in the coolant and the plug sheared off. (the plasitc one on the top of the radiator - v8 D1).
My dilema how is - how do I get the broken thread part of the plug out and where will I find a replacement at short notice. I am supposed to be leaving tomorrow morning and I don't have the luxury of time to waste finding a new plug (bit difficult without a vehicle to do the running around in.)

Any suggestions? :confused: :(

If you can get hold of a soldering iron, use it to melt a slot in the top to get a large flat screwdriver into.
If you don't have a soldering iron, heat the end of a flat screwdriver on the stove and push it into the plastic plug quickly, remove it and cool it down. You should then be able to put the cold screwdriver back into the plug and undo it. Works best with a large flat blade (like the ones with the square shaft as you can then put a spanner on it to turn it).

This happened to my 90. same crap plugs.

I got a big bolt and screwed it into the stuck plastic thread. It actually worked sweet for a couple of weeks until I got some nice brass ones. I removed the rest with a big screwdriver and a hammer, tapped it round and round until it came out.

Should be BSP get a plug from a plumbing shop Enzed Pirtek etc
