could the smoke from my 2.25 be related to the fact that it doesnt have a muffler or any exhaust other than from outa the head down and under the pass foot well? would appropriate back pressure help with a full system in place?

no, odds are you are seeing the normal cold combustion smoke,

Fozzy smokes like a chimney when cold and idling but once you get some load on or warm it up its gone instantly.

they all blow a little smoke on initial start up.

yeah but mine is so far like a chimney when the revs are put on but in saying that i havnt loaded it up either or prob had it going long enoupgh to warm as i start to move to mow or to move into shed to work on. ill try get piccy of the smoke and post for further scrutiny. thanks fellas

If it has been sitting for a while there is a good chance the valve stem seals are hardened and not sealing, which could lead to a lot of smoke, particularly if it has the butterfly in the intake to provide vacuum. (The vacuum sucks oil down the valve stems)

if it clears when you start driving (have a passnager watch it) its not too bad.

changing my shoddy injectors helped but I suspect my current batch of fuel isnt.

Diesel heads are prone to cracking you could be geting water in the combustion chamber. Have you checked the pump is timed correctly?

If it has been sitting for a while or not used a lot the fuel may be off.
drain the tank and put new fuel in. Diesel don't last long.
It probably needs a good run to get up to temp.
take it for a good run and work it hard with a load on a good pull.
They like a good workout now and then.

Mine was the opposite it had a bit of a restrictive muffler on and smoked a bit too mutch .
I put a Walker straight through muffler and it cured the smoke down to just a light haze.......Mark

lro i have only been able to move the pump only slightly in my last attempt at playing with the timing, all the injector lines seem to limit its movement but when i started it last sun it started better and quicker than ever before so the small movement musta been beneficial. and i dont think there is any water use as the radiator hasnt any bubbles nor is the level decreasing any.

groucho i would love to take for a run but it isnt registered and i only live on small block and it hasnt any vacuum supply for the brakes yet either even if i were to take it out to some vacant land or something. it did however get 20 ltrs of fresh fuel when i picked it up 2 months ago and the smoke hasnt changed in that time with it being started every week at least.
