ADR requirements for spare wheel carriers.

Hi guys.
In checking out the various options for spare wheel carriers, I note a lot have no provision for an auxillary stop/tail/indicator. Some actually say there is no need as the OE lights are not obscured ? ( when clearly they are ! )

I understood the lights had to be visible from a certain angle. Anyone have any data ? How do we wire in an aux LED stop/tail etc, without tripping faults ? Perhaps through the trailer wiring loom ?

You dont!

The wheel in a carrier is still in the std location, just hanging off a different mount.

You wont get pinged for it unless the cop has it in for you.

The lights must be viewable from a 45deg angle. I had a Kaymar setup, which has lights in the bar so it complies.

You can just wire up to the tailight cluster wiring. I had no issue with faults whatsoever.

I fitted a dual wheel carrier to my D3, tok it over the pits and got pinged for now reflectors and no visible reversing lights. I hadn't installed both spares at the time of the inspection luckily so one was still visible. I've written to Kaymar about this and to date haven't heard anything back. The new lights that come with the dual wheel carrier have to be wired in. I connected to the trailer wiring in the left hand corner of the rear bumper where the electrical multi plug is. Everything works a treat, very easy.
One thing I would be aware of is the rego plate light I would make the connector terminal opposites, male female on each wire if you know what I mean. Orginally they were both male on the light fitting I conneted them the wrong way round by accident and blew a fuse which was behind the glove box, what a job that was in the dark!!! just an idea.

Have a look at your road authority's website. They state the angles the various lights must be seen at, both horizontally and vertically.

Not all accessory manufacturers know, or care about the regs though.

In the top pic of my D3 there, the lights in the bumper are LED and wired to the tail, stop and indicator lights. But no reversing lights were provided by Kaymar.

Have a look at your road authority's website. They state the angles the various lights must be seen at, both horizontally and vertically.

Not all accessory manufacturers know, or care about the regs though.

After wading through various web sites, it seems the applicable regs are contained in ADR 13. The two key pieces of data for this application seem to be the lights have to be a minimum of 350mm off the ground, and they must be visible at a 40 degree angle from the lights to the centre of the vehicle. As they say...that throws a whole new light on the subject. I doubt there are many single wheel carriers that comply past 5 or 10 degrees. I guess that answers that question. I will need an additional light !! Thanks to all.
