G'day All,
My next project is to install a set of rear drawers to my D3 and would like to know if anyone has had any negative and or positive comments regarding a particular brand.

Hi Stevecor,
I have seen & used the Balck Widow versions, nice build good quality but heavy & well built.
Expensive yes too, & they dont like making alterations when requested.

Cheers.

I make my own, the finish is not great but they're strong, light and cheap ;-)

I've had Black Widow for years, can't break em, can't fault em
But they are pricey and heavy
Cheers Ken

Any pics RMP?

I'm thinking of removing the back row seats, storeing stuff where they fold into and making a drawer set to go on top.

I removed the last row of seats, made a bolt in frame to go on the seat mounts and fitted a Boab roller drawer system with six Gomo removable boxes so for me it is easier to pack each box in the house/shed and carry out, and then when camping or Motelling, you can grab the relevant box and take it to the camp cooking area or into the motel.
My main reason was for convenience, not to mention the price difference, the other fitted drawer systems do look better but are not as convenient in this regard, my system did have a small rattle when fitted but have two ratchet straps to hold it all firm now with no rattle even over bad corrugations as there is a 80 litre WAECO on top of the Boab that also rolls out on the top deck.
At one stage I had my two large 100amp/hr AGM batteries mounted up top and the fridge/freezer fully loaded while travelling thousands of kays of corrugations and not a sound or movement out of it, even while enthusiastic driving. Have now shifted the batteries down for better handling and the drop down fridge slide I fitted took up more room.
Under the drawers where the seats were there is a large area accessible to store the heavier recovery gear/hydraulic jack/spares etc.

I have a set of the OL (Dolium) drawers with the 6 gomo boxes AND the optional separate sliding top (for fridge etc) for sale in ADELAIDE - custom fited for the D3. They are mounted on a carpeted board that bolts directly into the LR tie down points.

Dolium Pty Ltd (http://www.dolium.com.au/view?command=cman_view_webpage&action=view&webpage_id=65&pkey=dolium)

All fiitted by Opposite Lock and used on only two 4wd trips. $1400 new (have original invoice) in June 2008;

Will look at offers - accepting freight will not be cheap - unless you live in SA or are prepared to do a trip here!

Send me a PM if interested!

Cheers!

Theres a thread here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/62611-shelves-cage-disco-3-a.html on the setup that I built for my D3. It's been to Darwin and back and a few other trips since I built it and I'm pretty happy with the way it's worked. I have made the tie downs for the fridge out of steel strap held down with turnbuckles and it works well.

Tote

Thanks for the replies, I have looked at the Black Widow drawers but the weight of the drawers puts me off. Has anyone got any feedback on the Tanami drawers.

IMHO you can't go past the Black Widow drawers. Have had them for 12 months carrying heavy tools during the week and recovery gear etc during offroad trips with never a squeek or rattle. They open and close easiely with that solid LR feel. Sure they are of heavy construction but that is what makes them the Rolls Royce of drawers systems.

I have just noticed that "BlackPerth" has a set of Dolium draws to suit a D3 for sale.

Send him a PM.

Hi Stevecor
I am also looking at rear drawer systems. Have spoken to Tanami and they will do system for D3 but if you want low fridge with 2 drawers on side they prefer to install it themselves (as haven't done one I think).
Offroad Systems have similar design although fridge is enclosed and have photos of both 2 & 3 drawer versions in D3: OffRoad Systems (http://www.offroadsystems.com.au/pricelist_disco_3.html)

They can do either aluminium or steel and former saves around 20-30kg in weight. It is single piece base that attaches by turnbuckles (or bolts directly if you prefer) to tie down points. Rear seats can be left in place. Cost of Fridgepack 2 in aluminium is $2250. The photo on their site includes a full length Milford Cargo barrier. The fridgepack 2 is my preferred option at present but negotiating slightly narrow version (950mm instead of 1010mm) to allow access to side panels & extra 12v sockets.

Stevecor,
I played with the idea of built drawers, yes they look nice, but that comes at a cost. In the past I've bought the Outback drawers for other fourbys, no problem good quality etc etc. On my D3 I've built my own. Surprisingly cheap and even though I say so myself they look pretty neat. If I bought draewrs they were to high to get the lid of my 40 litre Engle open. With the ones I've built I can get the lid open far enough, I can get the wire basket out to clean the internals and with the bottom tailgate up I still have good access to the inside of the fridge. I bought two long plastic drawers with small plastic wheels on they work a treat. I had enough room in front of the drawers or the back of them if you look from the back to have access from the back seats I was able to put my first aid kit, my snatch strap and the HF radio unit in the gap behind the drawers.
Sound a bit confusing I know I'm sure you get the drift. I used 17mm marine ply with boat carpeting from Bunnings, I still also have easy access to the plastic panels at the back so I can get at the filter on the SE and also the jack on the right not that I ever use it. I'm not sure if you still have access with the manufactured drawers, I never fitted them. My total cost was around $100 and the job looks quite professional. Don't forget if you don't fit the dual wheel carrier getting access to the winch mechanism for the spare is difficult with drawers fitted, I would assume!! Again I don't know I didn't fit ready made units.
Hope this helps.

I have the Black Widows

Like Peterall said the have the LR feel, they have possibly been the best installed and quality mod I have done to the car so far

Mine cater for the beer, the mutt and all the recovery gear :)

G'day All,
After looking at most of the options for rear drawers I have decided to go with Black Widow (ordered them on Tue) and accept the weight, will just have to be more consious of what I put in the back:)
Thanks to everyone for thier replies.
