Looking at a diff guard for my salisbury. (1998 Def 130 HCPU)
The ARB replacement cover looks very strong and at $200 they are not badly priced.
What are peoples thoughts?

Personally, I would go for this one:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/02/1570.jpg
EDIT - US$84
http://www.solidaxle.com/ProductCart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=35&idcategory=7
They have a couple of AU dealers, but they don't list the Sals/D60 cover.
(unless of course you can get ARB to price match?)

Crikey...looks like it will withstand a nuclear explosion
Any details of where they are available?

I did some googling and found the solid axle industry version.
I also found this test......
Differential Cover Test - The Great Diff Cover Shootout - Jp Magazine (http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/drivetrain/154_0708_bulletproof_test/index.html)
I think I'll just go with the ARB....easy to purchase from my local shop.

You could call these guys - they may have one in stock:
Wizard Performance
25/227a Brisbane Rd
Labrador Qld 4215 07 5529 3246 Wizard Performance (http://www.wizardperformance.com.au)
The ARB has the (minor) advantage of having a drain plug in the bottom:

Hmm, maybe someone should forward a copy of this test to the ADF......

I fitted the ARB front and rear on my 101 landrover.
A strong cover is specially important on the 101s front diff as it gets knocked all the time.
I have no complaints with them and the correct allen head bolts were supplied.
The cover makes oil leaks after shaving the diff harder and the ARB item is thick and tuff.
It also has a oil level dip stick set up so you can run the oil level where ever you want.
I also found it is slightly more compact than the standard cover.
The only draw backs appear to be
1/ the dip stick set up needs a allen key to undo and it is easy for dirt to fall into the diff whisle checking the level.
2/ I suspect there is less cooling surface for the diff oil.

Front Salisbury

note the extra drain plug fitted so you can weld up the original one if required for a diff shave.

Rear diff.
The cover was thick enough to drill and tap for the brake load proportioning valve rod bolt with out going though the cover.

A little bit of a shave gains about 25mm with no loss of strenght and leaks.
The standard drain plug is still protected.
To do more would mean a lot of work and relocation pf the bottom cover bolt with a welded drain plug etc.

Is there a gasket behind the cover or is it best to just use silicone?
I have ordered an ARB cover, so will hopefully have it in a few days.
I have also ordered a front diff cover - just went with the Les Richmond unit (made by white tiger) as I had these on my Rangie and never had a problem.
I post some pics when I get around to the install

Silicon would be fine, I used Loctite 518 to unitise the cover with the housing to try and strengthen it a little after the shave.

I used sikaflex and no gasket. However I am currently running a standard pan with strengthening and a drain plug welded in the bottom.
I welded up the standard drain plug and shaved as much as I could without losing any bolt holes.

I think 25mm is a little optimistic, I relocated the bottom bolt hole and Loctited the drain plug in (there is bugger all hex left, not enough to grip the plug properly) and IIRC I only took off 3/4".

Rick....your posts and work is what guided me.
I measured before and after.
The standard 101 clearence is 10 inch and the pic above is showing 11 inch with standard rubber.
May be the 101 has abit more meat around the bottom of the diff housing than a defender.( 101 still has full drain plug lenght)
I have a TDI defender and found I could gain abit of clearence with the salisbury on that with the standard pressed metal cover.........all quick and easy work with the grinder.
When money allows I will fit a detroit locker and a ARB cover on the defender and see how much more I can get with in reason.
Has anyone had any problems with the larger diff shaves ?

There are guys on Pirate who have put the diff upside down in a mill, milled down to the crownwheel, then welded a 10mm plate on to cover the hole. No problems that I have heard.
I shaved mine back in ~98. No problems to-date.

That's a pretty impressive gain then Ron, I'd be happy :D
Maybe the saved weight allowed the tyres to stand taller ? :lol2:
and don't forget Ben the ones that have turned down the OD of the CW to go even higher

Another option is the one from QT Services.

Above is a D60/sals that has been shaved and the ring gear turned down in a lathe.
And step by step on another (this is a 14-bolt - so slightly different)

I think a lathe is preferable to a grinder :o
