Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can advise how you can tell if a D3/D4 has the optional rear e-diff fitted? Are there any controls in the cabin or does it all just operate magically as part of the TR system.

only can get underneath ya car, look up at the rear diff,, and if there is a big round looking motor ontop with a conector on it,, it has e-diff, if there is a big empty space its just a open diff,,;)

I can easily see the motor sitting on top of the diff of mine by looking in over the top of the right wheel at normal height.

I've never driven a D3/D4 without the rear e-Diff so one of you guys out there will have to confirm this for me but...

If you have the sat-nav display screen thingy in the middle of the dash (i.e. instead of a big hole!) Select the 4x4 info screen, stick it into a TerrainResponse mode and a padlock should appear over the rear diff if it's fitted.

Camel,
You cant rely on the Sat Nav unit as this does show both diffs on the screen regardless if u have only one or not. The difference is it does not lock/go red when in use.
Cheers.

Previous threads have also talked about the indication on the Sat-nav. Can the e-diff be present without the Sat-nav and if so is there still an "in-cabin" indication?

Shining,
Yes you can get a e-diff without the SatNav.
But unfortunately there is no indication inside the cab if you have one or if it is operating at any particular time.
Cheers.;)

Hi, I have just bought TDV6 D3 without rear e-diff. My previous car was Jeep Commander CRD with electronic controlled LSD's front & rear. Does the standard D3 have rear LSD and is their any electronic control as part of its traction control system? I understand the standard traction control is still pretty impressive and am surprised to hear the standard rear diff is an open diff.

Standard rear diff is a completely open centre. The traction control relies on operation of the brakes.

Stig,

I think very early build RRCs had an LSD centre diff, but it was discontinued because it was fragile (and largely pointless).

I'd call the viscous in the d1 centre diff a LSD.

Because most LSDs in 4wds are useless after about 10,000km of real use

Struth, that counts out the rear LSD on my old 75 series 1990 troopie, after 350K it still managed to help me snap an axle.

Why would that be? The Disco 1 has a conventional 6 gear open diff.

MacMan is right; the Disco1 does not have a viscous or LSD centre diff.

It is a mechanically lockable diff - nothing viscous about it!

I believe the RRCs do have a viscous centre diff though that automatically changes level of engagement depending on slippage.

I stand corrected I was told all those years ago when I bought my Disco 1 that the centre diff was a viscous coupling with a mechanical lock. That explains why I was never all that impressed with the performance off road without the diff locked:blush:

Probably should have RTFM or at least the brochure that I dug out tonight to scan and prove you all wrong:p

As an aside the viscous diffs never were the success they were originally touted to be. I remember there were some XF utes with a special pack that had them fitted as well as the last Holden engined Clubsport but they seemed to fade away after that. Anyone know why as they seem like a good idea (Freelanders not withstanding).

I would agree ( most ) Our old Patrol ( soon to be sold ) has 200.000 on the clock, and will almost lift bitumen if wheeled around hard. Patrol LSD's are the exception though.

One of my sons bought a Patrol with plenty of kms. It had a clunky rear diff that turn-out to be an LSD that had normal diff oil used in it almost since new, as the previous (2nd) owner didn't know it was an LSD. A couple of flushes and it now works well.
