130 Cab Chassis ? Leg room alteration ? & Relibaility for Outback Trips

Hi there,

I am new here and am looking at Defenders, Very low KM or new possibly.

I went and sat in a new defender wagon the other day, and I am consdiering a 130 cab chassis. I found the drivers leg room to be a little better than my cruiser yute but if a couple of inches could be added it would be nice.

Currently I drive a tray diesel cruiser and now with a child am looking at a dual cab for my family thats still rugged like my cruiser for outback hunting trips. I need a dual cab as I have dogs too.

I have always liked the look/shape of the defender


I read that you can add a longer rail so that your seat slides futher back and creates a little more legroom for the driver and front passenger is this correct ?

My other question is regarding the 2.4 motor just wondering about longevity and reliability for use on remote cattle stations etc. I do not want to be annoying station owners with breakdowns etc.

Yep, there's extension rails available - these guys do them for a reasonable price

Do a search for MUDD RAILS. They are from the UK. About $100 from memory, and they shift the seat back 2" or so.

The 2.4 engine is fantastic and mated to the 6 speed box is a brilliant combination. Super low 1st and good long legged 6th for highway cruising.

Thanks for that link.......I was having trouble mentally overcoming the fact I am goind form a 6cyl motor to a 4cyl which I have too in a dual cab unless I do a conversion to tray back on a cruiser/patrol wagon. But maybe I am being stupid. If the new 130's are as reliable as my cruiser ute has been I would be a very happy camper. They just look tough !! I like the silver or charcoal colour.

Think of the fuel savings!! Mine gets 10 to 11L/100Kms.

For a 2.4 it has some pull.

dont forget the engines pedigree either..

the transit van engine... pulls very well in a big body... and has been abused since pre 2004 (and no one can abuse a vehicle quite like the british white van man) i think if there were any major major issues the transit would of found them...

Yes thats correct.....you would think major issues would be sorted on this engine. I was looking at another thread on here where this poor customer has had a terrible run !!

I also here there maybe a new engine coming for them too ? will it be bigger or more pwoerful than the current Puma engine ?

Reliability is a big thing for me as I do nt have any mechaincal experience. I just get regular services when my cars are due for them and expect that my mechanic will keep my 4x4 running !!

It would be good to know how to do a few basic things when in the bush I know, and I probably need to educate myself in this respect.

If a new engine is introduced to the Defender before a complete redesign, which I think is unlikely, I would be very surprised if it was larger in capacity (Tax reasons in Europe) or significantly more powerful, as this would mean either beefing up the whole drive train or making low range higher.
