G'day All...long story short...have just moved a measly 2.2kms...actually closer to exhchange...now can't get ADSL due to "tranmission loss". Live in the area for over 5 yrs...different properties...no issue till now. So havent had net...bar my work lappy with crap as can be wireless card.

Seems wireless is the go. Who is best option for Gold Coast hinterland area....and I hear an antenna is a good option as well. So any feedback on antenna's/ brand etc. We are trialling a prepaid vodaphone usb wireless....pretty crap....though works inside. Im on Telstra Next G...have to go outside onto verandah to use .....overall not a happy chappy.....aside from SWMBO and a teenage stepson whose online gaming and gone down the crapper. Any advice, thoughts etc would be greatly appreciated,

Regards

Stevo

It looks like you might be "in the valley of the shadow of death":o

One of those places that Telstra / Optus / Voda / 3 deny exist, but have to admit that do.

Odds are pretty good that your neighbours have a decent service with someone....

I have found that Telstra seem to have the best coverage for Wireless Internet. The last time I installed one in Qld, they said that if we couldn't get coverage, they would cancel the agreement once we sent the equipment back.

If you are looking at an external antenna, then a 6db mobile phone one would probably do the trick. They are the long, usually white one that mounts on a bull bar & not on the glass. I know I have seen them as DSE for around $120.

What about satellite? Actually wonder if the governments rural broadband subsidy would work for you, considering you live soooooooo far from town

not good stevo

seen people do all sorts of wonderful things to increase signal where next to nothing exists..

hope it works out for you in the end.

One of my techs lives at Coomera Waters or some such and can't get ADSL. Optus pushed him to 3G wireless which was disappointing in performance.

He's now on Satellite which seems to be quite good. To minimise the cost he's put in a wireless router which his neighbours uses to access the satellite and so pays half the cost of the connection. Something to consider...

Your choices come down to either wireless (usually expensive, especially NextG, although I believe they've just reduced prices) or satellite - expensive unless subsidised, and the latency will kill most gaming.

The Australian Broadband Guarantee will subsidise either satellite, or in some cases wireless if an approved wireless service is available (NextG is not approved). See Australian Broadband Guarantee | Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (http://www.dbcde.gov.au/broadband/australian_broadband_guarantee)

You do not have to live in the bush to qualify - just not have cable or ADSL available.

Search the net for designs of home built antenna for wireless connections, we built one for a friend who lived in the middle of parramatta but couldn't get ADSL even. Coffee can, some wires and jaycar got reception going to massive levels.

Thanks for the responses...would have replied earlier if it wasnt for the naff wireless. We are waiting to hear back from some mob who are on the broadband subsidy thingamajig.....as they have their own towers for wireless and meant to be pretty good. You'd think satellite would be ok as we are on satellite for Austar and that works just fine. Would need to be subsidised as pretty exxy.

Anyone know if the wireless router/ gatway would be more powerful than the usb you stick in??

when you say you have to go out side , what type of roof do you have on your house , like tiles , some times they put a foil sheeting just under the tiles and this does play havic with radio waves also do you have any foil ontop of the celing as insulation as this also plays havic with radio waves

Its a pain to have to run outside to answer phone...especially in this day and age.

Camo Awwwww you be going down me matey :p...and lets leave the porn out of the equation.........already got withdrawals;).

On another note...after more researching am closer to a reasonable solution....the solution being an antenna attached to the wireless gateway modem....apparently meant to make a pretty reasonable difference.

Your "wireless" modem didn't have any antenna?

Wasn't Lucas was it?

BTW I to also own a pair of these shorts, they are shorts of goodness. We will not be bagged for wearing such.

I have one of these on my car and it is AMAZINGLY effective. The house we stayed in on fraser had one for their next g broadband too.

I've never heard of this mob (http://www.mobileextras.com.au/ProductDetails/tabid/65/CategoryID/113/ProductID/356/Default.aspx) but the price looks ok. I'd call olbis (http://olbis.com.au/home.asp) and see what they say.

If you can get signal outside then I reckon one of those jobbies would fix the problem.

Do you have access to cable? If you have Foxtel and it comes in on a big black coax, you have cable.
It worked for me when I couldn't get ADSL due to having pair-gain wiring in the estate - best dial-up speed was 28.8.

Looks like wireless with a gateway and an antenna will be the way to go. Am over researching just want to get something even half reasonable will be good as opposed to the crap at the moment,

You can buy directional ( Yagi ) gain antennas to use with Next G etc. They are fishbones shaped and and look like the UHF TV antennas only smaller elements. You need to point it in the direction of the tower. That should get you a solid connection.

Next G's gonna cost if you start using it for online gaming etc however.

been thinking , do you have an usb extension cable, you could plug your modem into that and would that give you the possibility of placeing your modem next to a window
