Thanks, one and all, for liking my bugs on a string.
The topic for photo competition #08, on from now until Feb 21st, is Amazing Grace

Rules..

1. The challenge is to capture and depict graceful motion in a still photograph ... water, air, machines, people, an animal, if it moves gracefully, snap it but don't freeze it .. too much.

2. 1 photos allowed, taken any time, must be your own work.

See here for the general rules (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/camera-corner/82504-photo-comp-rules.html).

I will be moving around in Borneo over the next two weeks so may not be able drop by here as often as I'd like so enjoy ...

Thanks for your kind words Arthur. I find that pic is sensitive to calibration. My desktop looks great with it - it is currently my wallpaper. My laptop (also calibrated but with poor dynamic range) looks washed out and muddy. The lichen highlights are dull, etc. I'll have to tell my boss to get me a better laptop next time!

Somebody else please enter. I don't want to win by default!

Cheers, Steve

Steve did you have done a print proof of this image? I think that it would be a good idea.

for the last 6 months or more I do not have the chance to dedicate much time to photography and for that reason I do not participate in the compos as I would like to do it.

but because no other member have posted an image I am posting this image that I am not sure if meet the requirements in the compo.
The Paleheaded rosella was captured in my back yard.

What is a print proof? Proofs to me are a print version of thumbnails which you choose the ones to make full size prints from.

You do your final PP to your image acording to the printer that it is going to do the job and then print a A4 proof and see if the printer can replicate your calibrated image on the screen.

You can have in PSCS3 a soft proof on the monitor if you trust it.

If you are happy with it then save the final version.

I am sending my tiff files with open layers to a person that does all the work for me. He print an image according to his Monitor/printer and send it to me for my approval.

Well...

It looks like crap with soft proofing and looks like a very similar version of crap with the printed copy. So what do I need to do here? Calibrate my printer (which my Spyder 2 kinda does)?

If I edit the image until it looks good in print (or soft proof) then it will look bad on the monitor and on other's monitors.

What now?

Steve, before you are going mad make sure that you have the proper printer profile for the paper that you are going to use.
I can telling you that the person that do my prints for customers have an apple computer and monitor well calibrated and inspecial room so the light on it does not change the view on the monitor during PP
Also he have a $ 6000 Canon printer and individual profiles for each type of paper.
My work is close but the only way for him to produce the image that I like is for me to send the images in Tiff with all the layers open!!

If you calibrate your monitor during the night and do the PP during the day chances are that the calibration is not good. :(

For that reason I relay on the pros to do my work ;)

Resized it down from 800X800 to 600X600. Forgot about people with 1024X768 monitors. Did this on Photobucket's site. Don't reckon the result is as sharp as the original.

Thanks Arthur, and no you can't:p

It's the 24-70 really and you'd have to prize it off the camera!

This would be my most used lens especially now I've gone over to FX. I don't know why people complain about the lack of VR, it's a fantastically balanced close focusing and fast lens.

For landscaping I use the Tokina 12-24 which it is not a VR and I do not need VR for this type of photography because i use the tripod 95% of the time.

On the D300s the 24-70 in many cases will restric to much the angle, nevertheless is a very nice glass.

Yes, but not until after it's closed as you need all the entrant names. Even then only Mods could do it.
