View Full Version : My Wife Has Absolutely No Ikea.

None. Here in Tasmania. But...on the 21st of this month I fly into Melbourne to pick up our new (to us) 02 D2 TD5. So after an early morning red eye, a bus and a train to Frankston, pick up the car then on to IKEA and load up, must be time for a coffee (beer?) then off to the Spirit of Tas and back across the straight leaving at 7pm(phew):o.
My question for you all is:
How much IKEA fancies can I fit in the Discovery with all the seats down.
Would anyone be kind enough to give me (or point me to) the interior dimensions with all rear seats folded up (our new love is a seven seater). IKEA provides the dimensions of its boxed items on the website so I should be good from there. MMMMmmm SLS test one:eek:!
Thanks in advance...
Stu

I can't answer your questions, but be warned!
When I was living in Alice Springs an Ikea shopping trip in Adelaide required the purchase of an 8x5 trailer to get the goodies home!

On a US site and converted to metric: The following figures are supposedly with seats in folded position.
Length: 1340mm (134cm or 1.34m)
Width: 1100mm (110cm or 1.1m)
Height: 1040mm (104cm or 1.04m).
Would anyone be kind enough to check this for me? or will I have to accost an innocent discovery owner in a carpark with supercheap tape-measure. The blood is on your hands....:p

You are very right Richard. But while my wife and I are active supporters of the Tasmanian Arts and Fine Furniture industries, we are unable to afford to have the entire house filled with salvaged Huon Pine;).
The Scandinavians are actually quite good forest managers (compared to much of Tassie) and IKEA stuff has far more design input (and durability testing) then you would get at 'fantastic furniture' or Harvey Norman etc etc for which "cheap stuff" we pay a ridiculous premium here in Tassie on the largely trumped up grounds of 'shipping costs'.
So, does that mean you cannot answer my question???

I can tell you from experience that their tall bookcases will not fit in a Disco.:o
From memory, they are close on 2m tall, but only about 400mm wide.
Cost me $70 for delivery:mad:

Ok folks enough banter. We are talking the very serious subject of scandanavian film...err furniture.
Will somebody please, please duck outside and measure the distance between the closed rear door and the folded back seats? That's all I need really

Why not just buy a roof rack???
I recall the height limit for the boat is ~2.3m before you have to start paying extra. Should give you plenty of room for furniture.
(sorry I don't have a D2 so can't measure)

I fitted a cabinet in the back that is 180cm high x 93cmwide x 35 cm deep. It was resting the front headrests, but it fitted with back door closed(and its a 7 seater). You could fit more above and below because it was resting at an angle.
A lot of the Ikea stuff is sold as flat pack anyway.
You could try one way trailer hire.

Right you are Captain. My best regards to all who replied and they may find a patch of ground upon which to camp and enjoy wine and banter beside the river should they find themselves this side of the straight.

I like my Scandinavians on top. So for all our pleasure here is 270kg of Scandinavian goods brazenly attached to our new series 2. Yes, ask and ye shall receive. In this first image we see the many people outside the IKEA self loading dock that did not offer to help me load the 5+ 40kg boxes. As no one did offer to help I was unable to get a photo of them. Actually I paused to help another couple beside me who thanked me nicely before they drove off....

And here we are awaiting the boat..

nice car, pathetic furniture.
hope it didn't get rained on or you will have a bunch of swollen MDF/cheap plywood in 3 months time... and don't expect any of the book cases to hold a full shelf of books without looking like boomerangs in 6 months either...
