Hi guys, I'm thinking to give my Freelander2 a little bit more power, there are three products I have found, DP chip, Tunit diesel performance, and DMS. The first two have similar features, they are like piggyback computers, power up to 132kw, torque 441nm. DMS is reflash the factory ECU, power up to 147kw, torque 489nm, more power and more torque than the others, but almost twice of the price. What's your opion? Please give me some advises. Cheers:)

Hello,
I am worried that the extra strain on the motor would break it long term. The older Jap motors built a reputation for reliability on their being grossly under powered for their spec in my opinion. Its sort of like forcing drivers to go easy by throttling the power available to them. No strain and they won't break. Remember, its only the fast race horses that break down, the plodders go forever.
I decided against it because the TD4 is pretty good as it is anyway.

I'm getting a STEINBAUER in th next month. It gives you 480nm rather than 440nm from DP Chip. For $1900 bucks i think its worth it.

I cant wait!

Anyone used a STEINBAUER?

How is the Steinbauer going? Are you happy with it any issues?

Unfortunately Dorko's FL2 was written off by a hail storm. From memory he was looking to sell it and may have already.

Hey Guys,
I have a 2010 TD4.. and looking for a bit more jump as well.
Anyone have:
1. a chip installed
2. installed by who, (did they do a good job)
3. Like or dislike the new programming

Seems to be some interest out there in this.

cheers

I asked Graeme Cooper's about this for my new TD4 (110kw/420nm). A lack of power is an issue only on short-sharp overtakes; I'm told one can get fuel economy improvements which given I'm getting 8.9 or 8.7L/100km instead of an advertised 7.0L/100km - is an issue. Was told "3 choices - two types of chip, third is a chip+computer tune (to your particular car), costing ~$800, $900, & $1200" (if I recall?) third option was preferred by me. GCs also said, "don't do it yet, let it run in some more, and see." I'd like less turbo-lag as well...
But: if one could get improvements in kw & nm & L/100km and no ill effects (big end bearings? Or are they already up to it?), just an improvement in fuel use of 1.9l/100 (which is 20%, but that's getting it to advertised/factory) I'd recover costs in ~50,000km and get the extras.

Please note the big IFs! Watching this thread...

Hi,

Graeme cooper specialist told me that the basics of chipping is down to fuel quality.

Basically any engine manufacturer has to retune their engine to the worst fuel that engine will experience in the known market i.e. if they know an engine will be sold in somewhere such as south America where the diesel is of less quality, then all engines are tuned to that standard- weakest link in the chain if you will.

So basically, as was explained to me, chipping the engine and getting up to around 480nm from it, is really only re-tuning it to what the engine and other components were originally designed to handle.

Even so, I'd only chip it if it were out of warranty in the first place

Advertised factory fuel spec is done in a lab, No wind drag in a lab dyno!

It's indicative, and barely resembles the real world ever.

Smooth speed, tail wind etc may get one close!

As suggested, left the 110kw/420nm TD4 Freelander 2 run out of warranty before trying to upgrade. Was wondering about the new-ish Discovery Sport - but they're $60,000 for 138kw/380nm (if memory serves) - actually, no faster. (Probably handle better). Seemed like a result from a $700-$1300 upgrade would serve.
1. Dropped it off at Coopers (been going there 5+ years) for service and upgrade. (Friday)
2. Picked up car - new 'chip' "should be able to feel a seat-of-pants difference at the first lights" (I didn't.) No chart on dyno before/after available ("printer problems").
3. Sunday: 20km later - still in Sydney - had this weird 'I dropped the clutch' response to taking foot off brake (it's an auto).
4. Monday - back to Coopers. Tested - nothing found amiss. No codes from ECU.
5. Drove on - 5km back towards Canberra - engine light came on. Frighteningly - with a moment of 'zero throttle response'. Came good, back to Coopers. "We've never seen a car where the dyno didn't find the problem before going on the road before."
6. Coopers refunded the $ for the new chip ($700+) and reinstalled the old one.
7. Car ran fine; back in Canberra.

* I keep hearing that these motors can be tuned (easily) for about plus 35kw and plus 50nm. Also, the gearbox is rated for 470nm.

* Also - getting weird rattle from engine bay - not heat-shields; Coopers tightened most obvious things - only happens briefly on slow-take-off, and not always. Sounded like cutlery loose or some such.

Anyone able to advise re engine upgrade? Please note: I'm no true lead-foot, but we do take it seriously off-road from time to time. Reliability is paramount. More economy and the other plus-plus would be nice.

Contacted 'Roo Systems' (Gold Coast based) about their upgrades.

They did make clear to me (an info upgrade?) that what they do (and what Coopers tried to do) was an engine re-map, not a chip-insert.

Local agent was ACT Offroad; price was $1695.
* Which seemed steep.
* And - does anyone know - are they any good?
** only feedback I've had so far is 'pricey, and not as good as they think they are'.
* Given that Coopers, LR specialists, had problems with 'my particular car' - would it be smarter to just settle for current adequacy?

Advice welcomed...

An old thread, any experience with Chip My Diesel?

An old thread, any experience with Chip My Diesel?

I found that the 'problem' that thwarted the Cooper's re-map was probably a fuel filter. I looked up how to do that on-line and decided it was beyond my spine, if not beyond my spanners. That done - hasn't missed a beat. And running reasonably well.

Looked up 'chip my diesel' and stumbled across yet another series of dire warnings. Nothing product-specific. Does this answer your thread?

Cheers,

Phideaux

Yes, I guess. I like my petrol decision

I have had my ECU Re-mapped, no turbo lag, lots more power, same guy did my Alfa 159 2.4 turbo Diesel Very very happy with the outcome. He offered 3 different levels of power vs fuel consumption. With a full load in the back I can get about 1000 to 1200 klms per tank on highway, they both are a dream to drive. They are in Melbourne, Antonios Auto Service. It's not cheap, well worth it, once the ECU was upgraded, I have not looked back.
