what is the correct coolant to be using in a td5

Good question,a search on this site is your friend.

Specified coolant is OAT,the red stuff, other guys who are LR specialists swear by the best green coolant available, such as Valvoline G5,i think it's called.

Good luck

OAT the red stuff is what the manual says (2001) td5..I changed my coolant to tectaloy 90 plus about 50,000ks ago and have had no dramas so far..

You have to completely flush the system if you change coolant as I was told they wont mix..

Cheers Ean

I'm using the Nulon Red OAT coolant in my 04 Td5 ... so far at 130k no problems. When I drained and flushed it at 120k what I could see of the inside of the cooling system (and at a later top hose change), was as clean as a whistle. Spotless.

Seems to be readily available at K-Mart & Supercheap. Around $40-45 for 5L concerntrated (mix 50/50 to make 10L)

Any OAT coolant will be fine, regardless of the colour, I like the pink stuff myself as its easy to see in the tank and when its leaking lol........

I think my LR mechanic changed mine to Tectaloy Xtra Cool Gold (Green Coolant) when I had all of the coolant leaks fixed and the radiator flushed.

Save your cash...

GO to a CAT dealer....

CAT ELC - $70.00 for 20 litres  and its the same product that the stealer sells.

hitachi dealers too, infact any other place that services vehicles that run mack or cat engines.

The ELC is a little strong even in 50/50. Spoke to the head tech at Westrac today. Aparently its a little too agressive on aluminium components, and Cat engines have very little in them.
Also, the rubber components and seals are essentially Viton. Any seal not Viton will suffer with ELC even though its OK with normal OAT coolant.
Plus, any cooling system with any scale, not that it should as this is what OAT stops being Organic Acid, the ELC will remove it and again particularly with ally, start to erode it and end up clogging the radiator.
I actually had the same idea as I have about 700L of the stuff in the workshop. Add this to the Mobil Delvac 1 I have on pump, I have all my fluids sorted!
Going to contact MTU Detroit Monday and see how the Series 60 coolant stacks up as I got a healthy volume of this too!

Cheers

Andrew.

Digging this one up again, on a 300tdi (D1) the red OAT stuff is the go? And is it a 50/50 mix of how many litters to fill the rad/res?

Cheers,

PS: pulled tha rad out this arvo, what a PITA it is!!! Why would anyone wanna become a mechanic... spilt oil on driveway, not as bad as exxon valdez tho :P

According to RAVE:

TD5 refill - 8 litres
TD5 fill from dry - 13 litres
V8 refill - 12 litres
V8 fill from dry - 13 litres

Sorry, I don't know about the 300tdi.

So flushing the cooling system until water is clear,
add 5 litres straight coolant and 8 litres half and half
to make a 50%

It is VERY important NOT to mix coolants,,,

There is a bit about this in The Good Oil,,,;)

So, to ask a stupid question, how do you flush the coolant out of the motor? I tried putting garden hose in rad hose, but closed thermostat prevents water from circulating. What is the technique to do this?

Cheers,
Disconnect a heater hose, flush both ways, through heater core and engine block, until it runs clear both ways. Heater water comes from the top of the motor.

On my D2 I drained, and refilled with fresh water. Went for a drive and got it up to temp so the thermostat's open. Go home, let it cool a bit, drain radiator .... repeat 4 to 5 times or until water after the drive drains clear.

Then final fill with your coolant.

Spec' says Td5 refill is 8L ... there's no way in hell I got 8 litres out on each drain (I caught & measured around 5L each drain) ... which makes it a bit hard to get 6.5L of coolant back into the cooling system for a 50/50 mix.

Cheers,

Remove the threaded drain plug on the side of the block and flush with a hose thru the heater hoses. The heater hose running fron the firewall back to the water pump is the heater return. Use the one off the manifold going to the firewall. This will flush the heater core also.

In a V8, there is a drain plug on each bank but the RH one is a real PITA   as its wedged between the engine mount and the starter. You need a lot of patience or be prepared to remove the starter motor to properly flush this side.
The plug is a male square drive that needs a female 3/8 square socket to really get it out. I murdered two spanners trying to bend them to get it out. Eventually borrowed the right socket from one of the mechanics at work to get it.

Cheers

Andrew

So flushing the cooling system until water is clear,
add 5 litres straight coolant and 8 litres half and half
to make a 50%

If water is running clear then drained, 5 litres will remain in the system(according to RAVE). So, adding 5 litres straight coolant will mean 10 litres in system, leaving only 3 litres of half and half to fill.

When flushing the TD5 you need to remove the hoses for the fuel cooler and the thermostat at the radiator. Removing the cover from inside the drivers wheel arch (discovery) makes this easier as does removing the battery carrier. Then flush with the hose.
The TD5 uses the bottom 5 cores of the radiator for the fuel cooler. So not removing these hoses makes it a long and tedious job to get the old coolant all out. This very important if changing coolant types.

Filling and running then flushing will eventually work on the 5th or 6th go but, IMO, subjects your engine to unnecessary rapid cooling and is a real time and fuel waster.

cheers.
