2001 defender extreme 110

Hi. Getting ready for my final trip around Aus, but I think that I need a fender, as it will save me towing a trailer behind my disco.

I also would have to spend a bit on my 94 disco ie new S2 radiator, hoses,
new clutch etc, exhaust, replace turbo hoses in fact give the old girl a good overhaul.

The body is good and the td5 runs well, but the fender seems to be the answer. but I must confess that I have never sat in one.
have been looking at a 2001 extreme around 170k very good condition
How good is the traction control in these early models and can I disengage the abs system.

Seats are better than you think. I often drive for long stints without any complaints. (I am only 5' 11" though) I think taller drivers are a little more cramped.
You also end up with your elbow out the window as not too much elbow room.

Yes you can turn the ETC/ABS off - there is a sequence of brake pedal presses (I think 10) with ignition on - never tried it but there is a thread here about it , somewhere. Or pull the fuse.

I have never wanted to turn off the ETC, it works ok. I am told in sand, ETC works against you. I have, however, nearly run off a gravel road as the ABS made me skitter across the top of the gravel rather than digging in. If you are ready for this it is not so bad - but caught me by surprise. Why do you want to turn it off?

you can turn of TC with the pedal press thing but not the ABS.

the TC is more than good enough. Use it as a warning system and not something to fight you through an obstacle and you should never get stuck.

they are. I think the brake pedal thing is intended for diagnostics work.

The seats are not comfy... initially... but the wierd thing is that they never seem to get worse.. unlike our disco whos seats are great for the first hour or 2 then they start getting worse and worse, our defenders just stay the same, so not as comfy as the disco to start with... but no degradation like the discos... does that make sense? :)

longest stint i have done is 6.5 hours no cramp numbness or anything.. elbow room is an issue but long trips with A/c on wont be a problem as you dont tend to steer so much... but round town i always have the window open for my elbow :) im 6'1 and over the 100kg mark so not that small....

I noticed you put td5 for your disco... im assuming a typo as you put it was a 94.... edit duh... hence the name.....

Thanks for your quick replies, abs had a bit of a problem with it many years ago on a winding gravel road guess that if get the fender I'll have to get used to it.

Steve not a typo error should have explained that I got rid of the original 3.9 in the disco and fitted a td5 in 2003.

Yes, that is what happened to me. A hairpin bend (which I had misjudged:angel:) on the Tamboritha Road with deep gravel. I braked hard and it felt like I had no brakes :eek2:. I certainly got a lovely view of the Tamboritha valley and learnt a valuable lesson about ABS.

When hard braking on gravel, you can pull up quicker if your brakes lock and dig in. (Although the safety argument is you can not steer either)

I really don't think it is an issue unique to Defenders and something you just need to be aware of with ABS..:angel:
