So, is it just my 300TDi that coughs out a cloud of smoke for about 1 second on startup?
Seriously, I have to check my rear view mirror before starting to make sure I don't asphyxiate anyone who may happen to be standing close by, and then I get to see which way the wind is blowing by the direction the smoke takes!
Despite this, it stops smoking almost instantly - maybe it just needs to clear it's throat before singing?
Is this normal?

yep, normal although you might also have the start of leaky valve stem seals.

Yep, it's a 300Tdi thing to over fuel on startup and fumigate anyone silly enough to be in your blind spot:angel:

mine does the same but i have noticed it is much worse if you jump in , turn ignition on and start it immediately. If you kick the ignition over, let glow plugs do job then wait about 5 seconds AFTER the have done the job it kicks out much less smoke.
Try.... or pick the moment before you start. I like to wait until the convertible with top down passes close enough

Pretty much the point of glow plugs. Discos are not bad and you dont got to give them long, genrally when I had mine I would get in turn the key and put my seatbelt on and then start, just to give the glow plugs a couple of seconds, though they are fast start glow plugs. Old Toyotas etc used to be worse and you had to wait until the light went out which could be 30seconds.
