Hi Guys,
I'm probably covering old ground, and asking a stupid question, but what is involved in replacing a R380 manual trans in a 1996 defender, with the auto trans from a similar aged discovery. What is involved and what are the benefits/downfalls of the conversion. I'm wanting to do this for better drivability, easier boat launching, and better 4WDing control. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Phil :)

doable nothing super hard if your (or someone you know) is good with fabrication of sheetmetal and welding up mount brackets.

Give MR Auto a call as they have done one to there Defender.
Some of the things you have to do are
Take all the hoses and auto cooler of the car that you take the Auto out of and the Mounting bracket.
You have to use your T/case as the Disco one are different ratio.
You will need to re-lengthen your shafts as the Auto is a longer box.
Reshape tunnel for the T-bar.
and no doubt other little things to do.
But once fitted yes it will make it easier to use at the boat ramp.
Food For thought

PM Brad110 on here, as he has a twin locked 110 with auto. I have done 2 conversions and it is a great result, these should've been offered from the factory.
Carla, 300Tdi auto conversion will use the same shafts as the original 110 R380 combination, however I believe TD5 auto into 110 will require shaft changes, I think?? Or is that if the 4HP24 trans is used as it IS a longer box due to the bigger oil pump housing.
Go ahead you won't be dissappointed but as Carla said make sure you retain the 110 Defender transfer case.
