Air conditoner works great for a while then cuts out, blowing just hot air.

Have to turn off for about 10 mins then fine again.

Any suggestions

Thanks

Mine used to do that too. I had the fuse box replaced (under-bonnet) and all my problems were solved.

Has your car had the aircon link harness mod done?

The easy way to check is to look in the engine bay fuse box and see if RL10 has been fitted. Also look for a gold heatsink resistor screwed to the panel behind the left headlight.

Mine was doing that when I bought it. Problem with mine was the aircon compressor has a clutch plate on the front of it, which gets worn with use thereby increasing the gap between the clutch face and the electro-magnets that engage it. There's a fair bit of info about this problem on the various P38 forums - here and rangerovers.net. Mine would work a lot of the time - then not lot for a lot of the time too - as a result of the magnets sometimes managing to engage the clutch plate and other times not.

Anyways - the fix for me was to remove the clutch plate (1min job) and file (mill/lathe would be better) the central spigot down a bit thereby reducing the gap enough to let the electro-magnets do their thing once more. Apparently the clutch has *shims* when new that can be removed but mine were already removed so moved on to the filing stage.

There was a factory recall on this I think - with an associated kit for giving the magnets a bit more juice.

See this thread. I posted pics of the clutch and show where to machine it. The thread also includes the TSB.

Thanks for all the quick responses. Much appreciated.

I checked my fusebox and I do not have the RL10 relay installed or the gold heatsink.

How do I acquire it? Is there a cost associated?

thanks again

Ray

The TSB in the RRNET link gives the part no. You get it from a dealer. It used to be under $100.

Also check to see if you have the alternator link harness specified in the TSB.

If not, get both.

Sorry to be a pain, but I searched the links and can not find where the TSB's are.

The TSB is in the 4th post in the thread link I posted.

More likely to be the clutch not engaging. Common problem as the cars get older.

I agree with Ron. I fitted the power boost but aircon still played up. I reckon get the file out and your problems will be fixed or at least it fixed mine and many others on the forum.
Cheers,
Remy

I know its a late reply but I agree, it has to be the clutch not engaging. Mine was doing the exact same thing, we took the shim out and now the clutch engages no probs at all and the aircon works great now.
