Had a new visitor today, actually a pair. Very common throughout Australia but the first time I've seen them at home and we've been here since 1981. Here is West Gippsland, Victoria between Pakenham and Drouin, 1 mile north of the Princes Highway

Rainbow Lorikeet

Nikon D70, 1/320, f 5.6, ISO 400, 18-135mm kit lens.
Strangely ISO info wasn't recorded with the rest of the data, had to get it manually.

Hi DeanoH

Did you underexposed the image to have so much ISO noise or the D70 is like that at 400?

It's in there on the EXIF of the image you've posted as 400.

Green Rats is a good description and I think anyone in northern Australia would be glad to see them move south for a while.

South of Moore Park I hope together with the Noisy Miner, the bird that I detest more

Hi DeanoH

Right on the money Arthur, this was a quick grab the camera and fire, totally operator error and a kit lens at max. zoom. PP of 1 complete stop and sharpening. I would have loved to have the time to grab the D80 with the Nikkor 80~400mm f4.5~f5.6D VR, or even to properly set the D70, but it wasn't to be.
I actually like the D70 over the D80. Bit hard to explain, the small display with its non intuitive controls can be very frustrating, but I like the colour and exposure 'feel' over the D80.
What excited me was the first time I've had Rainbow Lokikeets at home.

Thanks.
When I call up the properties of the image in Windows 7 the ISO field is blank. I'll download it onto SWMBO's XP machine and see if it's any different. Don't know if its a camera or OS thing?
I use ACDSee for my PP as can't get my head around PS, even got CS3 sitting here gathering dust.........sigh.

As for the lorikeets, a bit rarer down here. Rats with wings is what we call Sulphur Crested Cockatoos.

We get sulphur crested and black cockies too. Bloody destructive things!

As for the EXIF, sounds like a Windows 7 thing. Have a look at Opanda. It was always good on Windows machines for viewing EXIF data.

Deano, you can improve the original of that shot a lot in PSCS3 if the original is on NEF.
If you like I can give it a go on your web post (even if it have very little pixels to play) and show you that it can be a keeper. Perhaps cropping out the legs on the original and converting it to a portailt will be even better.

Cheers

Thank you Arthur it would be good to see what can be done with CS3, especially from such a poor starting point. I was more excited with seeing a 'first' lorikeet here,:D taking a good pic didn't really happen.:( Sorry, cropped jpeg only.

Interesting that XP, Vista & W7 do not extract the ISO info. from my D70 (tried them all).
CS3 waxes lyrical about metadata, exif, XMP and such but doesn't actually tell you if it can extract and display it. One of the reasons I get frustrated with PS.

Deano, download the last version of Capture NX2 from the Nikon site is the version 2.2.4. You have 60 days to play with it ;)
I believe that Capture do a better job than Adobe on the NEF files.

Attached is your image after I have done some PP on the jpg file.

I clean up the noise on the BG very agressively, do a linear contrast and sharp on the bird
In my monitor it is an improvement considering the little amount of pixels that I have to play.

I would like to have your opinion.

Cheers

I think on any monitor it is a major improvement :), especially considering you had so little to work with.
My only 'criticism' would be that to me the transition between the birds breast/right leg and the background is very sharp, sort of like a cutout laid on a background. Whilst this brings the subject to the fore, to me it's a bit harsh.
I'll go to Nikons site after tea and download Capture NX2, I hope it comes with good support info. I've got a fair bit of work to do to become proficient in PP so hope I find it more intuitive than PS.
I'll also have a look to see if there's a firmware update that might fix the exif/ISO issue.
Thanks again Arthur for your assistance:D

There are a lot of support in the web for NX2, here are few links

The Ultimate Nikon Capture NX and NX2 Resource Guide (http://dptnt.com/2008/09/the-ultimate-nikon-capture-nx-and-nx2-resource-guide/)

Make sure that you have a comfortable chair at the PC :D

Check for a Windows update or even a Nikon NEF view codec for Windows 7
