Hey all
Was at the main local dealer today picking up my wifes D3 after some wty repairs. As usual the sales guy tried to get us into a D4. Superb vehicle but a bit short on cash:eek:.
He then spys my dual cab work ute and says "hey come and check out the 110 Crew cab.
Ok I said lets be fair dinkum about it.
First off the interior is very good for a work truck.
B pillar seemed to be ok (seat rail must be moved)
Motor & box seemed very good etc.
Then, after all this money spent on re design the freekin handbrake is still in the (I love your left leg position). Why couldn,t they move it or use the D3 electric unit.
The rear tub is useless, my Great Dane would get the poo,s trying to get room in it. What possesed LR not to bring in a 110 Crew Cab Chassis instead of this cut down hard top. It would become a fairly good unit with a good size tray on the back.
Looking at it in the yard it just screams out (look how useless I am).
For 50 odd thousand they have to be kidding.
Must have been the strippy tablet day at Design head quarters with a "lets cut the back off and ship it to the colonies"

It has one specific use I can think of - allows you to carry agricultural chemicals legally in a vehicle that will also carry the family.

I the 110 crew cab is extremely popular in the UK. Saw plenty when I was there.
You have to consider that the 90 outsells all other defenders in the UK. Many of them are sold in truck-cab form to farmers.
If they are used to (and happy with) the space in a 90, then the 110 crew cab is basically a 90 truck cab for a farmer with a big family / lots of workers.
You would be surprised how many sheep fit in the back of a 90/110 truck/crew cab. (but the english sheep are quite a bit smaller)

The hand brake and all the other design issues, I think all goes out the window when you drive one and women drop their shopping as the stare in awe at this insanely sexy car that has just driven past them. Defenders are chick magnets :wasntme:

Not my cup of tea, but I think the key issue is value for money. If they weren't charging the same sort of money as newer designs with higher equipment levels we could accept them for what they are, foibles and all.
I have two friends with Defenders. They just grin and bear it. Off road it all comes together. However, neither would consider paying the asking price for a new one.

Think the trouble is that Land Rover designs the Defender for the UK market which in reality is where the bulk of them are sold. If the UK farmers ever went over to Toyota or Nissan the Defender would be dead. They bitch and complain about the lack of reliability of the Defender however for some reason have never deserted the mark in large numbers. As there is only a very small market in the UK for a tray body on any vehicle do not think it will even have occured to their marketing department that there are potential customers elsewhere who might see it differently. Might change when the Defender replacement comes out if they decide to go for a vehicle which meets global needs to achieve sales volume rather than remaining a niche product. Be interesting to see how the new South American designed and built VW ute / dual cab is received in the UK market and the impact on UK Defender sales when goes on sale here later this year.
