Hi there :D
My steering wheel on my S1 1952 landie 80 inch, is looking a bit tatty now.
I used to have a tight fitting leather steering wheel cover, sewn on with twine, they even supplied a curved needle with the cover! The size is 17 inch (43 cm or 430 mm) .I have searched far and wide on the net and can only find a fluffy Australian lambs wool one (Yuck) and of course everything else is made for modern small diameter wheels! Does anyone know where the old fashioned, lace up,leather steering wheel covers can be found?

Try a place that specialises in accessories for trucks, not cars.

Pangolin 4x4 in the States do them :D especially made for series LR's. I have one and will be buying another shortly from them.

Interior Parts (http://www.pangolin4x4.com/pangolin4x4/products/interior/interior.html)

Not cheap but worth it ;) and I couldn't find anyone else that made them either when I looked

Interesting site that. Thanks.

Hi there

You can still purchase steering wheel tape from most auto outlets.

What I have done is repair the cracks with a little auto filler, sand and paint with epoxy paint and use the strapping. The strapping is about an inch wide and you buy it in 2 meter lenghts.

Just a surgestion.....cheaper option than getting covers from the UK etc.

Do not be tempted to buy one of the 430mm 'slip on' ones from SuperCheapAuto. They do NOT slip on and I actually ripped one trying to stretch it enough to fit.

Just my 2 cents. Others may have had a better experience.

Hi Ike,

I ordered one of your wheel covers for my 101FC just before Christmas - is smaller than a series 1 wheel and I had to provide wheel dimensions to you. Is now fitted and fits beautifully - is a great product and works really well.

Thanks

Not the best shots - the sun was a bit bright - but you get the idea.
Easy to fit, even sent me a needle:angel:

Very neat job - thanks for the pics

Looks like it's sewn-on rather than laced - does it come with holes punched or do you have to stitch it?

Sleepy
18th March 2010, 10:55 PM
Well it is laced with a needle:p I wouldn't call it sewn with my talents.

Yes, pre punched and comes with a really fine strong thread - not sure what it is but it is tough. and a needle - and instructions!

Took about an hour to put on. Quite simple to put on but a little laborious. Good result though.

Thanks again - you've done a great job with it

I will probably go the same way.

Hi there , some time ago I asked about a leather steering wheel cover for my series one with the standard 17 inch wheel. Well to day my quest is over, I dont have to send to the USA for one as previously found my another member. Just trot down to auto-barn . They are advertising 17 inch leather covers, made by RM Williams no less. for $29.99. A lot less than the well made American ones and we are supporting a local Australian company. Note that they are probably made in china under licence, maybe even use our leather in the process..... Will check them out tomorrow and let you know of the quality and if suitable for our vehicles

Tony , you can make it look like new with just shoe polish, give it a try and you will be amazed. Add $100 to the price at least

G'day fellow landroverites,
Today purchased the promised leather steering wheel cover, RM Williams brand, made in jolly old China of course,
from Autobarn in Taree. (the last one).
It is very well made, in fact 10/10, it took me just 60 sec's to fit.
It is a very tight fit and there is a technique to getting it over the last bit of the rim.
I splayed out the back of it and just stretched it hard over, no splitting or anything else, as someone else mentioned several posts ago.
Its quiet thick and will not split even if abused and I know that series one owners with dainty little miffs would never ever do that to such an important part of a land-rover? ;)
see pics for a look....
price $29.99 excluding grumpy young shop assistant, who really did not want to get of his bum to attend to my urgent needs..:wallbash:

Doesn't look quite right in a series 1 - I prefer the Pangolin ones and would (have) paid the extra.

Each to their own I guess. However I hope it works as intended.

Indeed it does Tony, thank you for your support.
At top of the new, improved, updated, super duper cover is a buffalo head with horns logo.
I was just wondering and toying with the idea of getting a buffalo head skull an horns and mounting it on the bonnet?:)
After that the next makeover could be fox tails to adorn the 2 wing mirrors on the wings....:D
There is a whisper that white wall tyres or painted walls would be more than original, in fact so unheard of that it might make the 6 o'clock news in northern Mongolia? I have a bit of white paint, but more of a dusky pink colour in the shed. As long as you could not view both side at the same time, maybe I could paint them by hand and no one would ever know of the colours from side to side ?white wall bar treads would be awesome?
When it goes into the shed very soon I thought that a Maroon colour might be different, never seen a maroon Series one, not ever, but, I still have some green left from last time, so..............................
This will take longer than the 60 min make over show in UK, but I do have all day this time.....:whistling:

Drifter,
you are fortunate to be one of the members of the promised land of surf , sunshine and opportunity!
Autobarn rarely joins these hallowed ranks, and has a policy of " last one on the shelf " , she will be right mate- attitude
You were indeed very lucky to arrive in the nick of time and secure your wheel of fortune steering wheel cover .:D
Just for fun , go back next week and see if your last one on the shelf has materialised again? went to a lock smith today to buy 2 keyed alike padlocks, guess what? they only had one left of the size that I wanted, so I went to Big W , and behold they to only had one left on the shelf .
I returned home padlock-less.
So did you buy it and fit it? :whistling:

Shunh,
super-cheap doesn't have them in our size of 17 inch or 420 mm , I have checked them out regularly and theirs are for modern small steering wheel cars.
when I saw the add for 17 inch ones in a flier at autobarn, I went right down there the next day, only to find one on the rack .
It was mine. mine mine.
Years ago there were lots of lace up covers in beautiful leather, but now very rare to find. except the link for the USA ones, that was on here several post back..

yup - 'tis fitted. My father in law has just retired off the farm (read R M Williams, Akubra, Driza-bone, moleskins, etc). He reckons "If it's R.M.Williams, it'll be a good'un :D

I bought a Super Cheap one - it looked lovely on the shelf. It said it was 430mm. Go ahead - reach for your tape measure and check it. 17"

I actually ripped it trying to get it on. I reckon it was 16.5"

If you do a Google search for truck steering wheel covers, there are 2 'suppliers' in OZ that stock the 17" lace-up ones (according to their sites). One in Queensland and one in South Australia.

I may still go that way - or I may complete the painting job I was doing on it - it was starting to look pretty good. Dunno. I'll see...

I fitted a supercrap one to Jumbuck the 80", went on nicely and feels good . I use it every day. In fact it felt better than the RM one so I bought another SC one and took the RM off Borumba the other truck.
The edges of the RM one felt too thick.

I still have the RM Williams one on the 2A

I bought one from the US but the purchasing process was not a good experience.

There is a crowd on eBay in the UK who ship VERY quickly and only a few dollars more than the US. Looks good, too.
