i was thinking about that, seems true from everything i've seen on telly. But then i realised everything i've seen them fly towards was lower than them anyway :p

try and catch a mouse/rat. kill it and stick it in below the lines, that'll get him aiming down!

never forget driving home one afternoon on one of the backroads, saw what looked (from a fair way off) like someone standing on the edge of the road wearing an ankle length drizabone..... then it took off.....

bloody HUGE bird!

I would love to have the chance to capture one with my camera but they do not come close to the coast or flat land. :(

I read that in the Nullarbor they are very big and come down to feed from the road kills.

There is a place I am very familiar with where a pair of these have two nests either side of a rock formation and each season they will nest in one or the other. Even saw them mate one year, total fluke. Interesting ritual though.

The beauty of both these nest sites (about 300m apart) is that there are vantage points no more than 30m away where you can actually look down into the nest and chick(s). PM me for a couple of pix if you want. Will learn to post one day.

cheers, DL

We have heaps of these big fellas here. I have found their nest, they're huge! lots of sticks and branches. Never seen on land on a power line here but plenty of Cockatoos and bats have been toasted however. Blows them to bits:eek:

The wedgies along the Nullarbor are about as big as the roos! Have a few pics somewhere...

It is funny, I am an active member of 2 international nature photography forums, every day the americans post a photo or two of their Bald eagle but you never see an australian post a photo of our wedge tailed eagle

Perhaps we are taken for granted to many things of our wild life here :(

Maybe it is more to do with American patriotism???

Personally, I have never snapped a good photo of one, because (a) I never have the long lens on the SLR while driving, and (b) they are usually shy - except for one pair chowing down on a roo in the middle of the road who didn't notice until we were almost on top of them.

I think the reason is that for many years they were wrongly blamed for taking lambs. When I was a lad out western Queensland they had a bounty of 5 pounds per head.Because of being shot willy nilly they are naturally wary and very shy and of course their range has been depleted because many areas have been destroyed and with that their natural prey by so called "Progress"
