I've been slowly in the process of buying a people mover.

Very slowly.

Slowly enough that they're coming around again.

I went to check one out on ebay a few weeks ago, real cheap, the bloke selling it turned out to be a Range Rover guy, so several hours of coffee later I reckon it's worth buying, even with the steam coming out of the oil cap hole, and the electrical problems and the small panel damage - it was very cheap.

He was selling on behalf of someone else, and by the time he got in contact with her to confirm our deal someone else had offered more and they'd decided to stick to the auction.

Bidding went higher than I was willing to pay, having seen the car.

All good, win some, lose some.

Today I saw some very familiar pictures on another car sales site, except the address has moved from one side of Sydney to the other. Went back through ebay and found the identical pictures on the Caravelle that I didn't buy. That is, except for the uglier pics. The blurb with the ad talked about how it comes with camping gear, and having taken the cd player out because it was a gift from his kids.

I couldn't resist, so I gave the bloke a call to see what the deal is. Owned it for a while. No, selling for wife's friend. Took the stereo out because it was a gift from his kids. No, no rust around the windscreen. No, never heard of Caravelles getting rust there. Did describe the panel damage from the picture that wasn't transferred over from the ebay ad.

I went on to ask if there was any engine trouble. No, might need a new radiator. He didn't mention the steam that'd put a kettle to shame. But no, no engine trouble, runs fine. I gave him the benefit of the doubt. When was the last service? Oh, it could do with one, definitely a few months ago, probably needs one soon.

I said thanks, and left him with it.

BTW, it had more than doubled in price.

And you'd think that was the low point in sales for the week.

But no. I spent Sunday driving down to a car yard in Sydney to look at a another one, low kilometres, price was reasonable. Rilka called them and quizzed them, all good nothing wrong.

An hour and a half later, it starts ****ing down the moment I pull up outside the yard. Go in, get the keys, dealer leaves me to it.

The dash is hanging out, the air-con isn't working, contrary to original conversation. The meter says 121K, but the upholstery says a lot more than that. Turn it on and the exciting lights come on. Under the hood there's no water in the reservoir, and the oil cap is looking rusty and full of condensation.

Three hours driving, five minutes shopping.

Still looking.:D

Apparently that's how you end up with lots of tadpoles.

And a peoplemover.

Lucky they're not toads, you'd end up with warts.

G'day, I have a mate with a caravelle that he's planning to sell and get himself a defender. Will give you his number if you're interested.

Discovery was never on the cards, Rilka doesn't want another big four wheel drive. It was looking like a Tarago until this thread - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/93700-i-am-not-fan-rear-seating.html

A Caravelle has more than twice as much between the third row of seats and the back door as a Tarago. That made it a pretty quick decision.

Delica mate

Petrol or Turbo diesel, 4wd capability and as many different configurations as you can poke a stick at...

Rear A/C
Crystal roof
Sunroof
Captains Chairs
LWB or SWB
Petrol or Diesel

Bloody fantastic to drive too, and not shabby offroad.

Are they "green imports"?
How easy is to get parts for them?

A close friend has one (6 children)... loves his 4wds...bought it because, he says, the "Delica" body is mounted on Pajero chassis and running gear. Parts no problem. Says it handles quite well without making any of the kids car sick. doesn't take it on the sand (safety issues with the kids), but formed dirt/rough roads etc in nat parks very good.

Yes, Grey import... Can get them from around $9k upwards depending on year and features...

Parts are easy as to get...

Mostly Pajero and Starwagon...

And the extras are available from http://www.delicashop.com.au (http://www.delicashop.com.au/) and other similar enthusiasts...

Goes great on sand too... And we've taken it touring on long weekends... Easier than the Disco as we just make the back into a bed!

FWIW ... We went from a Tarago to a D2 ... missus was worried about a BIG 4WD ... and wanted to get a Forrester instead ... :o ... but soon realized that the Tarago is BIGGER than the D2.

Hell, even a Commodore is a longer wheelbase than a D2.

Isn't the Caravelle the upmarket VW Transporter sized body ?? A Kombi on steroids ?

We were downsizing from 3 kids & friends to just 1 9yr old ... and a little dog :D

Kev..

How does she mean "big" Simon? I would have thought a people mover would have similar dimensions ie length & width. Is it the height that is a problem for putting the kids in and out of? or the running costs?

As far as parking & driving go they'd be much of a muchness I'd think

Dunno what it is, she drove the 130 as a daily driver for months in the city, and she has a bus licence, so it's not a size thing.:p

Delica looks good, but is too tall for underground carparks, and we need one vehicle that can do the shopping.

Tarago is second choice, but very limited space behind the third row of seats and not all seats have anchor points.

Oh, and it has to be eight seats, which rules out just about everything except a Caravelle.

What's the height difference between the V-dub and other vans, particularly the Delicia, Simon?

abaddonxi
5th March 2010, 09:45 AM
About 1800mm for a Tarago.
About 2070mm for a Delica with standard tyres.
About 1990mm for a Caravelle.

And 1928 mm for a non-lifted Disco. I've never had a height related issue with my car.

Huyundai's iMax or whatever the people mover version is, is a pretty awesome vehicle for its genre. 2.5 CRDi turbo diesel engine has plenty of torque and power. Manual gearbox is excellent too. Not much ground clearance :p
My folks have one, I drove it to Adelaide a few weeks ago as well as towed a trailer to Quirindi and back. Very comfortable on all seats, takes 8 people to fill it, has a good bit of room behind the rearmost seats and plenty of footroom for all rows. Front and rear split A/C. Quite luxurious for a Korean vehicle and the build quality is surprisingly very very high. Sliding doors on both sides are a bonus.
I guess being a fairly new model there won't be many on the second hand market though, and it is a big vehicle. I rate it highly :)

Sorted.

Black, shiny, turbo diesel.

And says it's 7.9l to the 100kms.:D

Along the way there was another half day wasted looking at yet another dodgy ebay Caravelle. All looked good, guy sounded genuine 100,000Km on the clock.

And when I get there, looks alright from the outside, test drives a bit underpowered. Try to turn it on again after the test drive, and it won't turn over. Guy says it's a switch on gear lever, got the part, off to the mechanic on monday. Check under the hood and the radiator overflow is pressurised, and the brake booster started spitting fluid at me when I took the cap off. Run, run.

And buy this-

But apparently some of us are not sure about driving around in a bus, all got a little emotional when the Outback drove off interstate over the weekend.

So she thinks she might like a Territory.

If anyone's after a Caravelle...

She already suggested a Puma.

If I sold the kids I might be able to afford one, but then we wouldn't need the extra seats.

Break up the paint with some graphics...

That's a good looking unit, Simon. I had a 95 version for 5 years or so ... we had 10 seats in it and used them all. Sold it and bought a P38! They're a very good sturdy car with an excellent safety record.

About the only negative I would have is that VW parts prices are expensive.
