Assuming that you have a wagon body, it's not too difficult to make up some boxes from plywood. A simple 'L' shape is sufficient as the other sides are formed by the body. Hold them in place with a couple of bolts and nuts through the lip. I did this ages ago and have had not difficulties. I can take a photo id this would help or if you're in Bris, drop by and take a look.

BTW, The speakers were Sony XPlod, I think about 10 x 8 inches.

I've got a 2001 TD5 with draws and can't workout how to remove the pannel where you have the speakers in the photo.

To change the number plate light I had to bend the panel and I have the feeling that the "floor" has been put down hiding the bottom screws/bolts

Rusty, I fitted ovalspeakers in the corners above the rear windows either side of the door. Made a couple of spacers to keep the magnets away from the body and being up at roof height it doesn't matter what you have piled in the back, you get unobstructed sound.

Theres a small outfit in the UK that make plastic speaker housings to place in the same kind of position scott oz has put his. I've forgotten the name now

I got a pair off ebay uk when I was that side of the pond. You can get ones that house 6x9 speakers and they take the place of the light housing surrounds and tuck in behind the window trim to look pretty much stock.

With the weak pound its a good time to order stuff from UK if your earning aussie dollars.

What about under the back seats in the tool box with ply boxes around them to reduce any tinny noise. Maybe use marine speakers so you can still hose out the back floor.

Otherwise, you have a higher roof, so maybe an overhead console with some reading lights & speakers.

Or... what about head phone jacks with individual volume controls. Then add a carputer, and get wireless internet, so that each person can select their own station....

okay, I'll shut up now.

Marine speakers are expensive though, otherwise I'd reckon that would be a good location - toolbox is pretty hard to access and not good for much else !

Wjere in an overhead console did you envisage ?

I am going to do an overhead console but it will be the type that goes down the middle of the roof - i.e. between diver and passenger. I can't put speakers on the rear bulkhead anywhere coz it would interfere with headroom in rear seats.

Any other ideas / comments from the peanut gallery ?

I envisaged a central overhead console as you describe, with a couple of speakers recessed into it, facing down. Some of our new ambulances have what seems to be a universal type in moulded black plastic with 2 speakers and 2 reading lights, but I don't know who makes them.

I searched for universal overhead console on ebay and found this other design

G'day,
for what it's worth I got my speakers for about $90. They are an indoor outdoor speaker with the ability to be used in your car or in your house (two different resistance settings built in) They came with all mounts and https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/04/1569.jpgwere easy to fit and sound pretty good, I'm no audiophile mind you. Sorry about the photo but the cargo barrier was in the way! I could only get 1 in shot.
Cheers

I like these and the position - out of the way of everything. I have the boom box type in the same position. The bloke who fitted them did a shiite of a job and they are too big. Where do I buy these?

I agree...I've been googling for these without success.

Lyle where are you when we need you? ;)

they are just outdoor speakers... can get them plenty of places... even ebay.

Bunnings have quite a decent range of outdoor speakers made by a company called 5th room. reasonable prices too.. we have a set of them running back outside.

Thanks

The speakers need to have a resistance of 4 ohm for car audio and those that I came across were 6 to 8.

Double check the manual for the amp as IIRC you can usually run higher resistance speakers.. But not lower.

They dont 'need' 4 ohms.. they will just output their quoted wattage at 4ohms.. anything less and you will damage the amp.. anything higher you reduce the wattage output.

The 5th room ones are 6ohms.. which should be fine as you will still be outputting about 32watts max into them... and shouldnt cause and grief to the amp...

There are 4ohm ones available as i was looking into them for the boat. Try looking for Pyle boat / outdoor speakers on the net as they do a few 4ohm ones... other than that look for wakeboard speakers or similar. i ended up getting them shipped from the states. but went with 6x9's and a 7" component set (waterproof ones) for the same price landed as some crappy 4" ones here.

Thanks

Steve

The drawer system is finally in, and the speaker box was also part of the job. These are JBL GTO936's - the sound drowns out the ford's rumblings

I got the same speaker box's from Supercheap. They had a cataloge there of speaker spacers, dash pods, drink holders and such.
They hold standard 6 X 9 speakers. I have them mounted in the back corner of my duel cab, bolted as high as I could get them on heavy L brakets from Bunnings, I havent had the back seats in since I put them in but they look like they wont be a head room problem.
I cant remember the price but I think it was around $60

Vlad, I mounted speakers on a sheet of plywood mounted behind the back seat, yes there is enough room behind the seat. The sound may be muffled a bit by the back seat, but it was definately an improvement over standard.

Cheers, Mick.

Sorry guys, havn't checked back in a couple of days, I got my speakers from strathfield car audio in thomastown. It was probably three years ago now... I'll have a look in the next day or so and see if I can get a manufacturers name off them for you.
Super easy to fit and wire though. I'm still happy with them.
Cheers

Given that the back of my defender is generally packed when we go away (not so bad now without the kids), speaker placement was always an issue. Anyhow I've just moved them to high up on the rear of the cargo barrier.

From the cargo area they present a nice clean face so not going to get caught on things. (sheet of scrap aluminium).

This one was knocked up to fit the speakers I had but it would have been easier and cleaner looking with a new set of speakers (but I'm a tight arse)

Going to have to do something with the roof lining when we get back from the cape though.
