I haven't been to see it yet but have seen a few reviews. One of which suggested it resembled a close take on 'The Taxi Driver', but moved from 1970's New York, to 1980's New York. Will see how accurate that description is when I eventually watch it.
There is certainly a resemblance to Taxi Driver. There are even a couple of TD easter eggs in there. It's not mentioned much in reviews I've sen, but DeNiro is a major player in Joker, in a way. But this film belongs to Phoenix and Phillips. It pays homage to The Dark Knight and Heath Ledger, it respects its source material, but it transcends them all.Quote:

Agree with all of the above, best thing I've seen in years. Magnificent performance by Phoenix.
Not really a spoiler, but if you go expecting a Batman movie you are going to be sadly disappointed, set twenty years previously, Bruce Wayne is in it but as an eight year old boy with a very minor role.
In fact I'm a bit puzzled why it is set in Gotham at all, as a drama it would hold it's own without the Joker character, and it's probably not going to appeal to that demographic.
Can't really explain why without giving away spoilers, as Molly says, do yourself a favour, GO AND SEE IT!!!
It is confronting, it is dark, it is raw, and it is totally engrossing...
maybe once a few more here have seen it, we could open up a discussion on the story itself.
The original scrip as it was pitched several years ago, was not a Batman/Joker movie at all, but set in 1970’s New York. Getting nowhere with that angle in modern Hollyweird, the decision was made to modify it slightly, into its current guise, mostly to get funding. Surprise, surprise, but a movie with excellent acting, excellent script, strong character development and no pandering to identity politics gets you a winner at the box office.
When I saw the Rotten Tomato’s official critics initially giving it a less than 20% approval rating, I knew it was going to be a great film. The audience score which came out later gave it a 99% approval rating with tens of thousands of reviews....
Well the wife and I just watched it.
Got to the end and she looked at me and said, “That’s 2 hours of my life I won’t get back.”
And I’d have to agree.
One of the least engrossing, least engaging films I’ve watched.
