There is certainly a resemblance to Taxi Driver. There are even a couple of TD easter eggs in there. It's not mentioned much in reviews I've sen, but DeNiro is a major player in Joker, in a way. But this film belongs to Phoenix and Phillips. It pays homage to The Dark Knight and Heath Ledger, it respects its source material, but it transcends them all.
Not NY though, it's Gotham. Well, it's meant to be.
It's nearly impossible to talk about it to anyone who hasn't seen it, and not giving 'spoilers' is also difficult.
