In tonight's "Our Guy In Russia" Guy Martin visited the Kamaz factory and when for a drive on their test track, which is actually beside the local railway line and snowy but those trucks still do well in desert conditions, 15 unsurpassed wins so far in the Dakar!

It does seem unfair that the Dakar is being held in Saudi Arabia, while women are still in their jails for breaking a driving ban that has now been lifted.

Saudi Arabia: Repressive Site for Dakar Rally | Human Rights Watch
“More than a dozen women drivers will take part in the Dakar Rally while Saudi women activists languish in jail for promoting the right to drive,” said Inès Osman, director of MENA Rights Group. “Saudi Arabia should not get a free lane because it is hosting a prominent sporting event like the Dakar Rally.”
Human Rights Watch, MENA Rights Group, and various other groups urge Dakar organizers, participants, and official broadcasters to press Saudi authorities to immediately release all detained Saudi women’s rights defenders and drop the charges against them. The Amaury Sport Organisation should engage with human rights advocates and adopt a human rights policy to ensure that its operations do not contribute to human rights violations.

And on Day 1 Toby Price leads the bikes by a five second margin after copping a penalty because his road-book was torn.
Only early days, but let's hope he can stay in front and increase the margin.

Toby Price leads after Dakar Rally first stage despite penalty after roadbook tears in half - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

DAKAR rally. Toby Price begins with opening stage win

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

His second stage did not go too well - dropped down to 9th place overall. He is making up some time on todays stage.
Have not checked to see where Fogatter is at.

There was a 17 year old that was suppose to be driving in the SSV class and had hopes to be the youngest winner at Dakar but the Saudi rules are that you need to be 18 to drive / race so he is unable to compete this year.
I also noticed that the motorcycles appear to have licence plates on them - I never noticed this in past Dakars. It does make sense that the vehicles need to be "registered" as they do sometimes need to travel on public roads during the liaison sections.

Well Toby made up some ground in Stage 5 (yesterday's coverage), winning the stage and holding 2nd place overall.
It doesn't look like very hospitable country, just sand squillions of rocks that seem to be causing multiple punctures, and destroying tires.

Official Dakar rankings - bike - quad - car - SxS - truck

    Cheers, Mick.

A sad day in the Dakar with the death of Honda rider Paulo Goncalves.
It was the thirteenth Dakar for Portugese Paulo Goncalves who was killed in the seventh stage when he crashed his motorcyle.
Toby price stopped to assist the injured rider and consequently lost well over an hour, but will have his race time recalculated by the organisers.

Next year there will be electric motorcycles and vehicles racing in the Dakar.
Currently there is a Renault hybrid truck racing.
