Don't forget that there is probably a whole film crew with them, that most likely lives in luxury at the same location.

Just watched Series 3 of Alone streamed on SBS.
10 people left in the wilds of Patagonia on their own to fend for themselves. The winner lasted 86 days.
They were given some basic items and a first aid kit, on top of this they could take 10 items of their own choice
A couple of people were pulled out because there BMI was at dangerously low levels, getting close to organ failure.
A few outstanding shelters built (they were allowed to take a polytarp).
They are up to Series 6 (Antartica), I'll have to track down where to watch the other series.

No, they film themselves.
They used helicopters & boats to get the people to their locations. The boats were brought in by helicopter.
Support & medical staff are 'nearby'.
Seems they have medical checkups, not sure of the frequency and I did wonder about batteries & memory cards for the cameras.
I'm sure it's not quite what it seems but still worth watching to see the ingenuity of some of the contestants and the weight loss was certainly real. Also the mental journey some of them experienced like one guy hoarding food (smoke dried trout) but not eating enough so he ended up getting pulled because his BMI was 17.

Season I of Alone starting tomorrow night on SBS 6.15PM
Participants dropped in the wilds to survive alone as long as possible, filmed by the participants themselves.
Series 3 earlier in the year was watched by the whole family (Cub, Scout, Venturer, Cub Leader and myself).
Really interesting to watch the effects of loneliness and hunger on those that last. Some fantastic shelters in Series 3 (still on SBS on Demand).

Have watched bits and pieces of the earlier seasons - watching season 7 now. Rather them than me. I’m not ashamed to say that I’m way too soft to even consider something like this. 😁

Did a similar exercise when did an Outward Bound camp. From memory it was 5 nights and 4 days. We had minimal rations, no tools (except a flint and striker), and one blanket. Being in the Marlborough Sounds area of NZ, it was rather cool, as well as pretty damp!
Quite a culture shock for some of the kids, but I'd spent a good amount of time in the bush before that.
