Eevo, the movie is based on CS Forester's excellent novel 'The Good Shepherd', written roughly 10 years after WWII ended. If you get a hold of a copy (hardcopy or ebook), you can see the what they were trying to portray onscreen. They did an OK job of it, although the book is naturally more detailed and focuses a lot more on the Captain. I enjoyed it and gave it about a 6/10 as well, especially since a lot of it was filmed on the Fletcher Class Destroyer USS Kidd, which they kept preserved as it served in WWII.
If you like the Good Shepherd, there are other WWII naval stories that are just as good written by Alistair Maclean, Nicolas Monsarrat, Douglas Reeman, Alexander Fullerton, Brian Callison, etc, that will probably keep you occupied for a while!
Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.
Those are all excellent Authors,, Monsaratt is my pick if you like tall ships.. Callison's Capt Trapp is a work of art...
