I disagree. While the dakar models were highly modified, quite a bit of it was based off the Pajero Evo, which was a short production homologation model. the dakar rules would stipulate what changes can be made, but I could guarantee that more than just the body stayed the same.

The pajero dakar performance was pretty good overall. They won a number of times, whcih has to amount to at least a small bit of praise.
I thought the Pajero was a better package than the Prado.
When I sold my D2 I bought a Pajero (couldn't afford a D4).
Nice to use as a daily driver and touring 4WD.
Great performer in the desert.
Not the character of my D2, but very easy to live with.
