98 3.2 V6 Rodeo Engine running but no pulleys moving..

    Hi all,
I'm sure most of us have had one in the family at some stage so hopefully someone can enlighten me.
I've recently bought a relatively cheap rodeo from my FILs good mate it's a little rough looking but overall it's a good runner. I've had one in the past that was not so good to compare it to, so I'm quite happy with my purchase.
Although I've had no problems with temp I've just started to give it a radiator flush and refill as its pretty dirty looking in the system and it only had water of course. Pour in some flush and start it up, viscous dosnt fire up straight away which I've been noticing over the last week or so.
Go have a look and it's actually the entire belt pulleys etc nothing's moving with any force, I could stop the whole belt by hand. Engine runs fine dosnt miss a beat, after a minute or so it all kicks in like it should. Pretty sure the viscous fan is locked on also though.
So my question is does the HB have a clutch of some description? I've noticed that the HB come with a woodruff key of sort online, does it float freely or could it have snapped causing it to? Dunno I've never seen it hopefully someone with a bit more wisdom has. Cheers

Hi James, this is your Mother.
You really need to start at the first DRIVEN Pulley as you probably are aware. I would certainly suspect the Woodruffe Key has sheared off. Refrigeration compressors would do this all the time. Cause? Wear & tear & seizing of some component was usually the cause. It also may have been just loose & that will shear them so the nut needs to be kept tight.

Hope this helps. If it does, then my BSB # is 123456.

When you stop the belt does the crank pulley also stop? If so, Des nailed it. Sheared key.

I'm not familiar with the Harmonic Balancer on this vehicle, but my thoughts would be, and I have seen this on commodores in particular, that the rubber mounting on the pulley has sheared off allowing the outer to not spin while the inner is still turning.

The rubber bonding may have perished.

Thanks all for your insights, sorry haven't had a chance to reply. It still stumps me that the HB locks in after a minute or 2 and everything works as it should, and it will work fine all day until the next morning. There must be a piece of the key floating around in the groove still and it just slips back into place after a few thousand revolutions. It still works for the time being but in the next week I'll have to fix it before it completely cacks it.
Regarding Les and loanrangie I don't believe it's the bonding as the crank pully isnt spinning at all.
I'll post a pic up when I pull the HB off
    Cheers Jim

Probably the crankshaft warming up and expanding into the pulley.
