    Waste tallow/lard solid veg oils use of

    Awhile ago I had a vehicle that ran on w.v.o and to a lesser degeee of success tallow. That vehicle was set up with a dual tank system. I now have my ute and a whole lot of oil and tallow. Don`t want to set up another dual tank system. The problems are many and the benifits few. I can blend the oil with the diesel. The tallow of course is a issue. Have been thinking about how to make the tallow thin enough with out heat. I am considering trying to homogenise the tallow with diesel. The solid fats would be broken down to a minute size and suspended in the diesel. Not sure though how the blend would go passing through a filter. Would over time the fat build up in the filter? I could heat the filter. Have looked on the web and there does not seem to be any one else going down this path. Most use waste oil. Another issue is the homogenising pump. I would only need somthing small for home use. The ony ones to buy are commercial industrial units for dairys etc. You need some serious pressure and a very small minute hole for homogenising. Might look at a pressure wash unit as they are normaly a piston pump. The homogenising could be quite simple, I have a idea for that. Still would need to warm the tallow for the process. That I still have from when I had the last vehicle. So would homogenising be a idle thought or a plausible concept and worth a shot at doing?

    Hi there. What limited knowledge of this I have, I have been told to avoid Tallow, block/solid lard and palm oil. The internals of the fuel pump really suffer with sticky residue.. Olive oil, peanut oil and canola oil are the go! Have a little system going using just Canola and Olive oil. I usually blend 17 lt of oil (that has had 6 months settling in a few IBC's and then been run thru a fine washable steel filter, sat in another IBC for a few months, then sent thru a std fuel filter and then a fine 10 micron filter) with 3 litres of ULP. This changes to 16lt of oil and 4lt of ULP in winter. Blending with diesel achieves little as the diesel is already at the thickness you require so you are actually thickening your diesel considerably.. IMO. Don't use with Td5's!

    A mate of mine mixes used multigrade with paraffin or 500ppm diesel.

    Works ok on an old IDI with a mechnical IP, but I wouldn't try this on anything newer.........

    I've seen setups over the years that have ranged from being able to run solely on the thinnest and cleanest of vegetable oils, to a guy in Adelaide who literally crams lard and tallow into the fuel filler of the car, poking it down into the tank with a stick. And the solution each time has been heat, and lots of it. In the case above, a heat exchanger in the main tank, hose-in-hose heated fuel lines from the tank all the way up to the injector pump.

    Running the engine on solid fats without heat, and you are going to be in for a world of problems. Sure, you can mix the tallow with diesel, but at times of inactivity, the fat molecules will congeal and stick, usually in places you don't want them to, such as the injector pump. Best case scenario, you'll end up with a fuel line blocked solid form tank to engine. Worst case.....

    I understand doing things for the sake of trying them, but I wouldn't be risking my engine by using solid fats and not heating them. Not when there are an abundance of liquid fats readily available to choose from.

    Rather convert the waste tallow or fat to bio diesel. Yes there would be a huge waste component, but you can always start selling glycerine as a by-product.......
