Read some where that these birds when they exit their hole in the ground their speed can be in excess of 80kph. Don't know how they do it as the opening isn't that big. Tried to photograph their exit a couple of years ago with no success. All I know is that they are dam fast.

Spent the weekend on the block and got a few bird pics, none of which are very good but the variety i spotted over the two days had me surprised a bit.

Dave that pic of the noisy minor is a really nice clear shot well done.

The first pic would of also been good if there wasn't so much noise in it. perhaps try putting it through a software such as noise ninja might clear it up a bit I haven't used it myself but apparently a reasonable program.

as a total camera noob,,
why are Derek's colours so vivid, and Dave's so washed out,,

is it just the environment?

At a guess Derek has possibly retouched the photo by boosting colours a bit but also derek is using much much more expensive lenses than dave.

Derek will also likely be using the camera in manual mode or Aperture priority but choosing his speeds and ISO's better, where at a guess dave could possibly be using Aperture priority or Speed priority and at times not watching the speed on the camera..

There is a function in the Nikon camera to boost colours by putting the setting to "Vivid" or "vivid+" and it does work in some scenes as I use it but you have to be careful as it can also over expose a shot easily too

that lot of pics were shot with the iso too high. and the camera is set on vivid +1 most of the time

was playing with settings the night before, setting up the custom profiles and didnt reset the camera the next morning in my rush to get the shots.

plus some are done at a long distance with big zoom and no tripod so i cant have the exposure set to long as it will be too blurred.

need more kit, and more clue

I'll leave it there as others can explain things better. I don't use Vivid as I can change this on the RAW image later. The image has been post processed.
