when my lens is at its widest I get a dark patch in the top left hand corner of the picture taken I notice it the other day...it was a bright sunny day, and I had the lens hood on could this be the reason? was it picking up a bit of dark from the lens hood because the lens is so wide?

Vignetting - actually at times this cannot be avoided with wide angle, but if it occurs on one corner only chances its just the lens hood not in place properly as Chucaro says.

Can also be the focus ring and can go away at different focus positions or aperture settings on some lenses... But agree.. more than likly the hood.
